Day 55. I’ve talked here about suffering from depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and substance use disorders, but haven’t opened up about my own agonizing experiences within my own profession. The negative stigma is so real that feeling judged for the very thing that you work to counter is like living a big lie. But, it’s time. I’ve decided to write a memoir based on the accounts of my last 35 years of desperation within a society and profession that simply won’t put up with mental illness. Treating it like a physical and medical illness somehow makes it acceptable, but isn’t that the basis of psychiatry and neurology? The problem with our society is we expect perfectionism without abandon where anything less is unacceptable and left to be discarded. The problem with mental health is it’s not treated fairly amongst the medical community. Big Pharma is a multi-billion dollar business that has led us to believe we cannot survive without them. I think it’s long past time to come clean and liberate ourselves from the actual insanity of societal expectations. It’s time to accept the truth and expose the real disease of society and mass oppression against the raw reality of neurodiversity.
