Did anyone have an emotionally or mentally abusive dad or stepdad? What happened

Definitely yes. I used to minimize it because I know of so many others that had it worse. That also allowed me not to deal with it. I don’t know how many more 2nd chances I have at recovery, so this time I’m digging deep and dealing with everything. What do you mean by what happened? As for what happened…he was an angry drunk. Bottom line was I felt like I was a burden and a problem to the family from as far back as I can remember

I too had a mentally abusive father. I never did anything right. From getting straight A’s to pulling weeds. I also had a good mentally, emotionally and sexually abusive husband for 30 years. Basically married my dad. So people pleaser for life. Agree with Lee. Thought everyone else had it worse than me. So seldom dealt with it. Time to clean house. Friend me if you want to talk.

I did. Unfortunately, he passed away nearly 11 years ago.

Oh yes , a verbally disruptive hard to get along with , lack of support step dad, but I love him just the same. My father that are in heven, loves me just the same. Its going to be ok, just a little hurtle in lifes tool box,ask God for the Angle that helps you in this deal... it can still be a wonderful life...

We had my real dads memorial in May, my mother passed may 25 her birthday, just days before dads memorial, I used my vacation days for that , so im still registering this whole thing, then it got cold and I caught the crud.. hands full of malarkey..

Yes.

Discovering unknown traumas from the real reason national family holidays are always spent alone miles away from any DNA and blocking their calls forever.

Just because my selfish mother was abandoned she found and kept a replacement worse than the one before.

Bitter and sober is just dry drunk.

I am drunk on dust and sand today.

Yes, my stepdad and I too always thought others had it worse. I thought I had dealt with it year’s ago but now I am not so sure.

I had the opposite. My dad had very little interest in me and had no way of making some kind of relationship with me/connecting interests.

It fueled my alcoholism as a teen in high school. I remembered the first time I got drunk, I felt loved for the first time and my anxiety of being around people went away. I distinctly remembering when I was 17 realizing that I was an alcoholic and telling my dad when he was giving me a ride home from a party. I was drunk. He just shrugged and said, “No you’re not, I used to drink a lot when I was your age too.”
I also drank in high amounts in hopes my dad would show some concern. (Stupid I know) but I know it was a huge contributing factor to who I became as an alcoholic.
He later got therapy from a troubled past from his abusive dad (who I had no idea about) and it changed him. We now have a semi functional relationship and he’s been a positive force in my sobriety. I’m very fortunate.

My ex wife was very mentally abusive though, and it ruined many future relationships I had moving forward.

Moving forward after I got sober I realized that I was turning into my father, distant, no emotion towards others thst I loved even though I wanted to badly to show I cared.

So thankful my current partner was patient with me and helped me gain trust from my past abuse and work with me on expressing emotion. Still to this day I catch myself being too quiet and I have to force myself to be more expressive for the sake of those around me.

Yes. Thanks for posting this.
