Does AA work? I went for awhile but stopped
For me, AA works because I go to meetings, I have a sponsor who has a sponsor and I made a commitment to help others in the forms of service work, I made a commitment to a home group, and when the hand of AA reaches out, I respond without hesitation. In other words I do the work (one being working the steps with my sponsor) otherwise I would not be sober. AA gave me all the tools I need to not pick up a drink. Everything any alcoholic needs in order to recover begins with willingness and having an open mind. Hence, it works IF you work it.
Thanks. I need to find the right group
I went to 90 meeting in 90 days. Shared every meeting. If that meant I expressed gratitude and moved on. I got to know which meetings I liked. Found a sponsor.
Many factors have gone o to my sobriety but I couldn’t have done it without AA.
Take what you want and leave the rest behind.
I would try meetings and give up I guess I was still in denial I tried a new meeting this week and I’ve been going the last 4 days it’s a great group, I also have a sponsor now so I agree with Carrie it works if you work it! I’m new to all this but this group checks in on me, they genuinely care.
Finding a fellowship that you want to belong to takes work, willingness and an open mind to not only seek out meetings but to actually give them a fair chance. In my opinion, not that I know a darn thing, cuz I don’t. I learned to take suggestions and to let the will of my higher power guide me
I go to therapy once a week but need more
Sure does
these little meetings saved my life I hated going there sitting with a bunch of people I don't know or care for to talk about my alcohol was essential to my mental health and lifestyle growing up. Funny thing every time I sat there laughing telling silly jokes I think I forget alcohol and more lemonade
I had. Till today lemon juice is my favorite thing to drinks
If you do not find AA for you try SMART meetings they are local and online. I have found my local meeting very helpful
The right group is key. I’m going to keep looking myself. I’m enjoying the 319 meetings on zoom lately.
It does for me, 3 years and I’m going to do the next 24 hours sober also
I will look up SMART meetings
It works if you work it
AA is a fantastic path to recovery that has been successful for millions of people! It’s definitely worth looking into! Just know that you have many options you don’t feel like AA is right for you. Someone suggested SMART Recovery which is another fantastic option, a little more modern approach that doesn’t involve 12 steps, it’s more of a cognitive behavioral approach. The good thing about SMART is that can be used on its own or in conjunction with any pathway to recovery because it doesn’t conflict with any of the others values, traditions or guidelines. It’s all about what works for you! I always say, if wearing one red shoe and one blue shoe keeps you sober for the rest of your life then guess what… where one red shoe and one blue shoe!
Yes Sean, try different groups. Alcoholics come in all different shapes and sizes. You hear a lot in AA, especially in discussion meetings. My sponsor took me through the steps using the Big Book and the 12 & 12. Do you have the Meeting Guide app?
Been sober almost 9 years. It worked for me. Please keep coming back. Also, go to some speaker meetings. Listen to people tell their story.
No, nothing works until we are ready for it to work.
It wasn't my thing but it seems to work for others. Therapy twice a week was really helpful to me especially in early sobriety
As we say. It works if you work it:blush:

For me AA saved my life. But it wasn’t the meetings. It was the 12 steps that gave me a God of my understanding. Meetings don’t keep me sober God and the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous does. Don’t get me wrong I love meetings but they won’t keep me sober. I need more than that. I need to help another alcoholic and keep my gratitude. One day at a time!
AA works for some but didn’t work for me. I didn’t like their concept of absolute - in that it’s AAs way or the highway. Also, I didn’t find shaming for drinking or being told that you’re not working hard enough if “you’re not ready”. The term alcoholic is a bit dated too. I found therapy and IoT far more helpful and positive. Just my thoughts… find something that works for you.
