Does anyone have to deal with family members who constantly make you feel a certain type of way, even by just talking?

I have an uncle. Everything he says is with an aire of "I'm smarter than you." He can make it seem like he thinks you are dumb for drinking water. I just ignore him. He tried telling me once that Hawaii doesn't ship their pineapples out of Hawaii.

Absolutely and I feel horrible for even saying that. I’ve been trying to be the bigger person and to not let them impact me but it’s really difficult so I try not to talk to them

Right there’s so much trauma in bedded. And you can’t explain that to them because they were just turn it around on you or say you are wrong

Yea they downplay it and make me think my perception of things is inaccurate. It’s wild sometimes I believe them haha

I feel this. I started kicking anyone negative out of my life. I can’t help myself and deal with gaslighting and negativity at the same time. Even family. I just don’t feel understood. When I try to explain my feelings it feels like they twist it and make me out to be the problem. It’s kind of lonely without some of them but I would rather be lonely than sick over the words and actions of another person.

I wish I had my family in my life. We were all very close growing up but many of my cousins and I don’t really talk anymore. My mom recently passed away and all I really have left is my son and he’s not even taking my calls or speaking to me due to my recent relapse again. His last text said, Dad I can’t do this anymore you got to get clean and sober. Anyway I guess he’s tired of hearing I’m sorry and tired of me hurting him. I recently got out of detox and I’m hoping I will be able to rebuild my relationship with my son Josh. My son means a lot to me and I’m hoping and praying for God’s help in my recovery and I’m praying He will touch my son’s heart and help me rebuild my relationship with him.:pray::pray:

Well if you work at it he will come back, at this point it is action over words. You need to get at least a year clean before you reach out to him, because it’s not fair to him for you to keep stepping into his life and relapsing. If you need any support at all I’m here

Thanks Ash, I appreciate it.

My family yes has always made me feel and think about myself a certain way. A few years ago, I decided to distance myself from my family with the help and encouragement from my therapist. I even allowed her to read my letters I sent to them. She said I explained myself well and if they arent able to see it for what it is they probably never will. Amazing therapist by the way. She was the best I ever had. I tried to explain to them the work I was doing on myself. I wrote letters and emails it came with more judgements and criticisms. They have been very critical of me even without the alcoholism it's been this way since I was a teenager. I an going through a very difficult time and iti'm the remain with their dismissiveness and zero acknowledgement of things
