“Were you spanked as a child?” Someone once asked me. And I howled with laughter. “Spanked” doesn’t even begin to describe what went on in my house.

Grandfather was the human version of a turkey buzzard, always trying to control everything and everyone in the house. Being the nasty man he was, he used threats of violence, and acts of violence, to control us. He wanted his dinner on the table at exactly two in the afternoon (old-school Italians eat dinner in the middle of the afternoon), and if grandmother put dinner on the table at 2:01, not even god himself could save her from grandfather. His dinner was late & so she was slow, stupid, lazy, and she was the unlucky recipient of his physical displays of rage. Grandfather wanted me silent when he was atop me in the bedroom, so he put one hand around my throat and squeezed just enough to make me understand what all he was capable of…
