Drinking Dreams

Second night in a row I have woken up scared bc I had drank in one of my dreams. :joy: I hate when that happens. The times before it was much later in my recovery. Like months in. Now it’s weeks. Just curious if others experience this and when ?

Ha! I haven’t had one in years. I had them a lot in early recovery. I used to call them my “get drunk freebies” I got the feeling but didn’t have to restart the clock :joy::woman_facepalming:t2:. I remember them being extremely vivid. But they didn’t scare me, I think I enjoyed them.

It’s weird that I am having them so early this time. I wake up in a panic thinking I have to restart and I’m gonna feel awful. :joy:

I HATE drunk dreams. While I do not have them nearly as often as I use to, they still do tend to crop up from time to time. Massively upsetting and anxiety inducing.

One of the ways I have learned to deal with them is exactly what you are doing. Talk about them. Find someone you trust and let them know what is going on. For me, it's helpful in moving forward from the dream and all of the emotions it stirs up.

It is a reminder to me just how horrible this dream is. We are never free of it whether awake or sleeping. But there is a flip side. You woke up SOBER despite what the disease is trying to convince you of. That is a miracle of sobriety.

Thank u ! You are so right. Talking about all of it helps so much. And so happy I’m still sober.

Sometimes, it’s normal to have them though. I haven’t had a using dream in a long time, maybe like 5 months. Guided Meditation before bed is a huge help.

Drinking dreams are the worst!!!! I still remember them vividly and I haven’t had one in almost a year or so. I have a reoccurring one that I relapsed and his my drinking from everyone!! I even went to meetings, still told my original sobriety date and everything. Honestly, it still scares me. An AA friend of mine with 35+ years said he had them after 25 years or so. Our lives were consumed with alcohol for so long I think it’s natural.

I am at a little over 2 months without a drink. I have had 2 dreams where I was tempted to drink but didn’t. The second one someone put a glass of wine in front of me. I did take a tiny taste and then pushed it away.

I also have had using dreams about 3 months into my recovery. I guess there's a lesson learned without the consequences of actually using. I believe using dreams are useful for learning what we would feel like if we used without actually failing in recovery.

Great idea. I never thought of that.

Makes total sense. I try not to to forget how much booze consumed my life and thoughts so retraining my mind might take a min!

That’s a good dream

Yeah I wake up in a panicked sweat :joy:
