So about a year ago I got fired from the job I had for showing up after I’d been drinking all day. The worst was I worked at the local jail so of course I got hit with dui. I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life for this stupid mistake and it bothers me every day. This was also the day that after many years I finally realized that alcohol was controlling my life and I was doing what it told me too. I stay focused though and keep telling myself to learn from mistakes but it’s still always bothering me. Anyone else ever had a situation like this and if so how did you try and handle it?
Definitely. I have many things in my past that eat at me but one sticks out. All we can do is accept that this thing happened, and show yourself some grace. At the time you were sick and your not anymore. Your doing your best to not be like that again. Today you are a different person. Be proud and forgive yourself. You deserve it.
Yes as a matter of fact. Fired from two jobs.
Time heals everything my friend. People have short memories. Your new life will drown out the details of the past.
About 11 years ago I was fired, from my job as a legal assistant, because I drank a bottle of scotch and fell down some stairs, all before 10 am on a Tuesday morning. And I didn’t die of embarrassment.
Thanks guys it feels good sharing this with others who have been in my similar situation
This didn’t happen to me, but I kind of wish it had. I was in that state where I wanted help but couldn’t ask, so I went on a tear hoping somebody would notice and say something. I no-call, no-showed 3 days straight from work and binged. Went back on day 4, still drunk/high, expecting to be fired but nobody did anything. It made me feel even more crazy and I just used more.
I have many regrets like that I just further buried with more booze. I try to make sure I get out of my comfort zone nowadays and help others. I may never completely forgive myself hopefully I will but I sure try and make up for it. Makes me feel better
9th step my brother. Make amends and you will be set free.
Yes brother- but I don’t commit them to “paper”; or it’s digital equivalent/ at least not in public.
Thank God and, my recovery community (AA); and my friends I don’t have to look forward to more mishaps like this…it’s a lesson buddy…that’s all. Laugh it off and be well!!
Oh, and I speak from experience. I made an appointment with my old boss who fired me. He declined. About 6-8 months later I needed something for my current job that required me to visit my old job. It was weird and scary but he was there and I made my peace. He was so nice. He was amazed to see me. Said I was unrecognizable.
Accept that it happened and you are getting better. It’s been almost a year and I still get memories like this but they don’t hurt as much because I’ve been sticking to sobriety and building and growing. Remember where you came from but where you are and where you are going. I try to focus on the positive things and how much better life is now and will be in the future. Goodluck you got this!
Oh yeah, I have a "big one" that was so embarrassing and regretful. I still think about it all the time. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever get over it. Instead, I use it as fuel to stoke ny commitment to never go back "there" again.
Let it be a lesson but not an eternal punishment. Try to focus your thoughts on what you’re doing to correct it today, as opposed to beating yourself up about it.
Yes I am in the medical profession and I to had been fired from several jobs it took a second DUI my 3rd rehab jail and to be homeless to finally realize I had had enough I am now sober 16 months and things are getting so much better learn to forgive your self one day at a time😊
I am a medical professional too.
I'm hesitant to come forward with my issues so I'm doing it alone. Not easy but I'm doing it. I haven't gotten a DUI but I've made a total Flippin fool of myself on more than one occasion.
Haven’t we all! Feel ya Beth!
I’ve gotten canned from 7 jobs. Lots of dwis and it’s made me stuck in my past at times. I’ve had to dig deep to make it right and move on. If I can do it, you sure can. I’m a stubborn mule when I do wrong
I have been in a very similar situation. I have moved out of state and am starting a new sober life here in Recovery. I do understand I am facing DUI charges as well so it’s not easy
