Is it just me or is anyone else having a hard time managing their emotions?
M, even though I’m 16 years sober, it’s much easier now days, but still a challenge at times.
How long are you clean and sober?
It’s just you! Kidding…Of course:) It’s a roller coaster for me. Went thru terrible anger early on then crying uncontrollably. Having emotions is a blessing now but it was confusion. Work on controlled breathing. Helped me a ton. Just a thought. Keep going buddy. Be proud.
It’s def not just you. Ooooo no.
Managing emotions is a process.
What helped me.. Education and awareness. Any kind of education will speed up your recovery , grabbing a good book that teaches you about yourself, your nervous system, how your brain works, listening to podcasts, learning from other people’s stories.
When we can’t name what we’re feeling, our nervous system freaks out. That emotion gets stored in our body, and it comes out as anxiety, overreacting, fear, shutting down… all of it.
In recovery, we’re learning to feel for the first time in a long time. Our brains are literally rewiring themselves. What I've learned that’s neuroplasticity. We spent years numbing, and now our nervous system is trying to catch up to all the emotions we avoided. Add in past trauma, the trauma from addiction itself, and yeah… it’s a lot.
Keep asking questions like this and engaging here. Someone has the coping tool you need, and sharing like this is how we all get through it together.
