Every Christmas I visit my family and we drink red wine the whole time. I quit drinking July. I'm sitting with my fam and no one is mentioning alcohol. There are no bottles of wine out for guests. I'm craving my red wine so much. I can't believe how much I have previously associated Christmas with drinking. I honestly haven't had a craving this strong since quitting.
I'm not going back tho. Alcohol is a destroyer of lives, in my opinion. Does anyone else have the holiday trigger? If so, how do you navigate the season?
Hi Laurie, that’s rad that your family nixed the booze to support you! I don’t usually get triggered around the holidays by booze (it’s more my interaction with family that drives me bonkers), but I was at a Christmas party last weekend and they had plenty of NA beverages for me, but they made all the egg nog into hard egg nog and I found myself tempted to test some, just a fleeting thought, but it was there for a moment.
Idk I wish I could help I'm asking the same question
You are doing the right thing talking about it. Holidays are all triggers to us with addictions. It’s normal. Pretty cool your family loves you this much to try and be there for you. Now that’s Christmas spirit. Family helping each other. Keep talking and just don’t pick up and you will get through it. Afterwards, you’ll feel like a proud whole new you. Are you doing meetings at all?
No...just the app so far.
They are a good bunch, my family.
Great job ... keep up the hard work. It keeps getting less difficult... BRAVO

Great. We are proud of you.
People, places, and things.....
We have so many associations with our old ways and drinking. So often I experience the same you are. Until doing something sober I didn't realize how much I did that drinking or associated with drinking. Proud of you for not drinking. Stay strong. You working the steps and have a sponsor?
I'm not. No sponsor. I've just been using this app
Just drink your Ovaltine.
(Gosh I hope you get this reference)
Hot tea, decaf coffee, sparking apple juice, going for walks, deep breaths, calling and texting sober friends
Lol
Need sober friends. That would help.
More ovaltine, please!
Laurie B. cravings come and go. For me, I remind myself that a drink is to die. Being around other sober like minded friends is a huge plus in early sobriety. After we get more time under our feet we can be around others who drink. I actually was around to people the other day that were drunk and it actually made me not want to drink as they reminded me just how terrible I was when i drank…
I also work the program of Alcoholics Anonymous pretty much daily. I find that when I help another Alcoholic I’m relieved from the bondage of self. And that’s a good feeling.
When you can aa. Org for zoom meetings. And in person meetings. 90 meetings 90 days. It’s nice to see a family cares about someone in there family that’s sober. Good job family!!! Aa
