When it comes to explaining your addiction, it can be fairly easy talking to others at AA or NA, Smart Recovery or a counselor. However, how do you feel about explaining your addiction to someone who is naive to towards the subject? Do you feel confident in your explanation or do you feel embarrassment and shamed?

Sometimes it feels easy talking with people in recovery because they understand what addiction really feels like. When I’m talking to someone who has never faced it, I try to keep it simple and focus on what it was doing to my life. I don’t always feel confident, and sometimes there is embarrassment, but the more I share it, the lighter it feels. No one deserves shame for trying to stay sober.

Unfortunately, I have been "shamed" by individuals that I had to explain my addiction to. Including an actual M.D. This was back in 2017 before healthcare providers were as informed about the subject as they are today.
