Feeling a wave of depression. Usually when this happens I

Whenever I feel my depression creeping up I go out for a drive and go to a park or something. Sometimes I'll go to the movies by myself and sit back and relax with a gigantic soda and some popcorn :cup_with_straw:.

I feel you, Lisa. It’s really hard to figure out what to do when we feel this way. Sometimes I try to think about what might be making me feel like that. And sometimes I just feel that way for no reason and that’s okay. Frustrating, but not something to think you’re broken about. Distractions are good, but it’s not the end of the world if they don’t work. If you need to cry and sleep instead from time to time, do it. But just be safe and make sure you’re still trying to do other things as well, even if they’re small.
When I feel depressed, I try to treat myself the way I’d treat a partner, or myself as a little kid. I’ll be patient with myself, listen to what my body is telling me, and say supportive and loving things to myself. You can also do stuff like hug yourself or cup your face with your hand and rest your head into it. Stroking behind your ears is also a proven way to release endorphins (that’s why animals tend to like it when you pet them there) and honestly,, even something simple like that can help. Even if it’s not a perfect fix, I find it can help me feel like I can get off my bedroom floor for a while. And this is good for when you feel like you can’t do ANYTHING. Try just holding and telling yourself that you’re doing a great job by continuing to stay alive and sober (there’s no lie there, you really are), or whatever it is you need to hear. And when you feel like you can get up, you could go make yourself a snack like you’re making it for someone you love. Eating is especially important when we feel like this, especially if it’s hard to eat.
