Field Guide to Life Connect with a Sponsor If you don’t

Field Guide to Life
Connect with a Sponsor

If you don’t have a sponsor yet, please find one as soon as possible. Your sponsor is someone who can understand what you are going through and may have personal experiences you can learn from. Like any close relationship, this relationship can get stronger or weaken as time goes by. A sponsor who was right for you during your early recovery may not work out as well later. Remember, it is always OK to change sponsors or seek additional sponsorship if you feel you need it. The bottom line is that your sponsor can help you stay on track.

You may think that you have enough support already because you may have supportive friends or family members. That support will help you enormously, but nothing takes the place of having a sponsor who you can turn to if you get into real trouble. You may run into a situation where you are embarrassed to turn to family or friends for help. People can relapse or slip back into old patterns. These are times where having a sponsor is essential.

Action for the Day

Find a sponsor this week. Go to a few meetings and see if you find anyone who fits. Ask others in recovery if they know of anyone who could be your sponsor. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for advice. And if you already have a sponsor, don’t hesitate to call your sponsor when you need help or advice.

Thought for the Day

“Bring the body, and the mind will follow.”
