First sober Thanksgiving - tough day

11 months 19 days of sobriety…. First Thanksgiving sober and it was VERY DIFFICULT!!!! After spending 5 hours with family I realized WHY I always would get WASTED at every holiday…. I’m looking for healthier coping skills to deal with challenging family members!!!

Good for you!!!

What were some of your coping skills?

My first few holidays were scary and difficult as well. Family can be a trigger for us, but I found that going into it with a different view of the reason we are getting together helped. I learned not to engage in the conversation that wasn’t healthy, toxic, condescending. The last year was awesome! No drama! It can happen if you make the decision to change your mind.

Hi Kurt - the main thing that helped me is that I didn’t “engage” with the negative comments. I held my head high and made and served dinner with a smile (even if I had to fake it)
Also, I’m involved in AA so I went to a morning meeting before people came over and then went to TWO meetings after everyone left.
And yes, I shed a lot of tears after everyone left.

Trust me it does get better. Hang in there!

Congratulations on your sobriety!!! Almost 1 year is amazing!! I spent 4 hours with my family, and I know what you mean. It’s so uncomfortable! Bottom line is we didn’t drink. I have so much to talk about with my therapist lol

Same here. Glad u made it through. One holiday down. A few more ahead!

Good for you! I had my first Thanksgiving with my sister and her kids who are old enough to drink. There was wine and mixed drinks they had, my drink of choice was always beer luckily there was none there and I took my own drink which was iced tea. Tomorrow is 10 months sober for me and I felt great that I made it through.
