I was in great shape for a long time before my life and marriage took a big turn for the worse. Over the last few years, I let myself go, drank way too much, and ate horribly. I put on about 70lbs and trashed my liver and pancreas.

I couldn’t stand myself after getting sober 11 months ago. How could I let myself get like that? My body and mind were both broken. Sobriety was going well, but my work schedule was my excuse for not getting back in my gym. I work 12+ hour days 5 days a week. A few months ago, I just said F’ it. I walked in the garage gym I spent years building and started back at square one.

3 months later, I’m stronger, healthier, and have already dropped 40 of the 70lbs. But most important, I’m truly happy again. I stopped fighting myself, and started fighting for myself.

Anyone thinking about exercise in sobriety should really give it an honest shot. It works wonders for both physical and mental health.
