I’m new and recently noticed some people attach a selfie to their post. It kinda caught me off guard but that’s what a lot of people use for validation on the social media platforms. I completely understand what you’re getting at as this real aspect can discourage people not getting the same level of attention. Not sure how many sober social apps there are but I didn’t see many options and maybe this one gained a little ground in popularity by copying this trait. There are many psychological studies on this topic and most come to the same conclusion
Personal thought - I think we are all going through a hard journey of some kind and we all want some kind of acknowledgement. Whether it’s how our looks or our character has improved. As long as people are here instead of at a bar, in a bottle, or somewhere else we shouldn’t be, it’s a win in my book. Do ya’ thang if that brings you happiness and continued sobriety
I usually wouldn’t reply but after learning the other day about implicit bias in a training course I could see what you mean. For me I know I generally don’t scroll any messages and I post or comment on whatever first or few are in line of sight. And sometimes not any unless spirit moves me to like or comment. I for one am a sensitive alcoholic so I try my best to not read too much into whatever goes on and just remind myself what the BB says, “nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake”. Thank you so much for starting a conversation around it, that was one of the training points, to “call out” what we observe in a nice manner and correct our behavior IF it in fact needs correction.
If you're focusing on something like this you're not focusing on your recovery. This is something that has been going on since the beginning of time and definitely doesn't apply just to sober discussion.
There are 13th steppers that prey on people that are in their infant stages of recovery. Hopefully that isn't the case here.
That’s the nature of social media platforms..it sucks. I don’t believe the collective consciousness is evolved enough to resist a popularity contest.
Thanks Omar!
Personally I'd like to advocate for less selfies and more pet photos.
🐈⬛
I second this. I think everyone deserves to see my 22lb cat!
Yes I agree . That’s why I’m making the point that everyone deserves acknowledgment here

Tracy you’re 100% correct…. There’s other platforms for that
I agree. There’s no need to be posting pictures with your boobs showing etc.. looks like something from sites that’s advertising something else..
I have said this very thing a couple times and people lost their minds. Sometimes, people's profile pics look like Tinder accounts....
I only talk to ugly people.
Everybody needs to pull together and report anything that seems inappropriate. The problem is when people see something that is inappropriate and don't do anything about it.
This support group belongs to all of us and so it's up to all of us to take care of it. Report it and block it.
There's an old saying.
If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem!
I'm observing this thread to be quite judgey all because some people are getting attention simply by attaching pics alongside their posts. To each their own, if it doesn't suit you, move along? I'm merely commenting bc it's trending and has been for some time and really don't understand the whole point of it. Just an observation. As some people have mentioned, it's human nature to respond easily to visual content
Yes, I agree. But unfortunately, we’ve all been a bit indoctrinated in the era of social media, dating apps, and are probably biologically wired in someway to express interest in people who might have an attractive picture. This is sad if it is causing others to miss out on the community engagement and feedback that we all need and signed up for this app to get!
I’m going to send a short message or a letter to the staff and creators of the app and see what they have to say about it, and if there is any way, they might make changes in future updates that avoids featuring “hot” people. It’s a tough thing, because recovery has led me to appreciate each persons inner beauty, but a picture can help connect us as people and humanize each other. Maybe those without pictures or who feel, they are not getting represented could post an avatar! I would recommend some thing “cute” and colorful.
Am I personally blameless? I doubt it. But one thing I do is to go out of my way to talk to those without profile pictures or information. If coming onto this app is part of your service, how about we all make it a practice to respond to a random post a few times a week. These could help equalize the attention people need and deserve on an app like this.
Lastly, while I think it is great to celebrate one’s sobriety, and the “before, and after” pictures can be quite compelling, perhaps those should not be featured as the entry points into somebody’s recovery story. There is a dating portion of this app, supposedly, so I think that would be a better place to try to feature yourself or find a romantic connection.
Thanks for bringing this up! Important.
Ouch!
Agreed! I already reported that dude that has a b0ner in his profile pic
You made a lot of good points. I don’t care that people post pics. I’ve done it. I was simply making the point that people that don’t post pics or aren’t by society standards “hot” don’t get as much feedback and recognition
Duuuude that guy sent me a friend request and I was like wtfffff.
