For those that have been sober for a while, how has it impacted your brain function? I'm 8 months sober and my brain is so incredibly foggy, does it ever get back to "normal"?
I was a very high functioning alcoholic. I have noticed that I’m not as driven. I’m three years now but at 8 months the dust from my drinking was just settling, I was in the middle of finding out who this new self was and there was a lot of unknown.
Thanks... At least I know it's part of the process
Yep. Day 27 for me, and I have a lot of trouble concentrating, when that never used to be a problem
It does get better. I went and had all my levels checked with my doctor. I was waaaay deficient o a lot of vitamins. Make sure to eat well and stay hydrated. Also a multi vitamin daily helped.
I drank a lot for a long time. When I entered recovery the fog lifted at about 90 days and i have continued to regain some clarity but at this point it’s impossible to know what’s from booze and what’s from age. I’m not as sharp as I was 25 years ago but who is?
Hi Brian, do you feel like a driven person now at 3 years? I’m one year sober, just starting a new job, and I’m really struggling to motivate. I used to be such a hard worker and now it’s like my brain just wants to check out all the time.
I have actually lost motivation sober, I’m a ton more healthy, mentally and emotionally. Things that seemed so urgent when I drank just don’t anymore. Like today, I have plenty of important things to do but I just rested. My body needed rest today but now I’m feeling I’m going to be behind all week. I think when I was drinking, my motivation was to get all pressing things completely done so I could get drunk without the pressure of not getting important things done or possibly creating a lie that I worked so hard I deserved to get raging drunk as often as I did. I do hope a healthy balance comes because there is a definite lack of drive
Yeah that’s a good point and I relate. I find myself saying now, oh I’ll get to that later or I’ll do that tomorrow because technically I know I’ll be sober and able to get to it later or tomorrow but then I don’t. I find a reason to check out and rest. But then my anxiety climbs because I feel like I’m not doing enough. And I’m left with the same feeling I had when I was drinking which is that I’m getting away with something and I have all this fear that I’m going to be found out as a lazy employee who doesn’t follow through. That’s a lot haha but I’m fully in the Sunday scaries right now
That's the best way I've heard it described Brian. My doctor thinks it's my anxiety meds working... Kind of makes sense, I too would hurry up and get my to do list done, and I was also still trying to convince everyone I didn't have a problem
I found that I had no motivation and it didn’t improve, even after a few years. Went to doctor and found out that I had under active thyroid. No wonder I had no motivation, couldn’t stay focused or concentrate and had mood swings
