Found out my brother is struggling with alcoholism too

My nephew called me tonight upset saying he knew I might know how to help because of what I do and my past but that his dad (my brother) is struggling with drinking. He said his dad had promised them he would stop drinking but they found him drinking again tonight with hidden bottles and my brother admitted it was because he was worried about withdrawal. I’m struggling with knowing how to be there for them as I am 8 hours away. I just don’t know how to support my brother through this because it took me falling completely apart before I was able to accept help myself…I just don’t want him to get to that!

Think he will agree to meetings with you? I’m sorry you are dealing with this!

So, your brother wasn't resistant (initially) to quitting, apparently knows he has a problem? That's a good start. He's not up this way(Cleveland), is he?

Unfortunately no I live in Cincinnati and he lives in DC

Dámn, okay.

Cincinnati is a great city, lived there in the 90's.

Mandy regardless in whether or not you can help your brother, you are seeking help yourself and this focus is the most important thing for you at this moment. No matter if you or I like it, the most we can do for other family members is to help ourselves. And I support you 100% in your betterment. Al Anon or Al Ateen is available also for non drinking family members who reside so far away.:love_you_gesture::pray:🫂:sun_with_face::kiss::heart:

You don't have to drive 8 hours over there to help him. You can use a phone and ask him if he wants help. Then and only then you can share with him what you are doing and how it's working in your life. There's an AA app you can share with him also called, Meeting Guide.

It can be used to find meetings all over the country.

There are online meetings on the app as well so while he finds local meetings for himself, you could help support him by at least joining a meeting or two online together.

I think you meant to send this reply to the OP.
