Gearing up to go the grocery store. Anxiety has been through the roof today, so I’m hoping I’ll able to make it through. It’s crazy how something as minimal as buying a few groceries feels like such a monumental task.
Hang in there sister! I did that yesterday and made it through. You got this!!
When I first got clean from Dilaudid/heroin etc etc in 2006, I remember being in the grocery store and standing in the aisle looking at the bread, and realizing that I had no idea what kind of bread I even liked. I had been living so terribly prior to that, that I wasn't even really sure how to do normal people stuff.
I must have looked ridiculous standing there, finger banging all the bread....
I made it through!!!!
Finger banging the bread.
Don’t eat bread. Carbs are bad for you
If you can, go on like a Monday or Tuesday morning. No one is there but old men and women. Never kids. No couples. It’s amazing. People say “excuse me, thank you” and have manners. It’s a beautiful place on a Monday morning at 7 am
Hang in there.
Simple carbs are bad for you. Complex carbs are delicious.
Bullshìt. Old people are rude as heII Haha
Bang! Bang! You're BREAD.
Holy sh!t can I relate to this post. I've gotten better the past month or so but my first few weeks sober I was out of it. Had anxiety constantly. And as u said everything seemed like a big deal getting gas & smokes, going for groceries, I had to meet up with customers of mine it sucked.
You’re gonna have to. You can do this
Old men, and old women to a much more limited extent, are the only people I interact with now that don’t treat me like I’m some kind of societal leper.
I am the exact same way!
Fake it till you make it, I have trouble waking my door around the block some days nevermind going to a store or even worse my kids school where I use to work right before I got sober. One fuckem all step at a time!
I know exactly how you feel. After a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease and super sick I would have panic attacks before going to the grocery store.
I found back then that if I planned out my my trip such as; route there, make a detailed list of what I need. Go down each isle or even look up what is where on what isle online, etc. and only go down those… be prepared and have a plan.
That’s great advice, having a list definitely helped! Also, I have Crohn’s too!
Hey, I made it to the pharmacy yesterday....AND there was still TWO whole hours until they closed! But seriously, anxiety about regular stuff is common. I have been in a homeless shelter for 3.5 years. Adjusting back into society has been challenging for me. I didn't pick up though. 5 years clean and sober coming up next month! I didn't do it alone.
Do you fear having a panic attack when you go out? Some people develop Agoraphobia from that. Keep going out don’t give in to the fear.
