Got messed up at band practice last night, but at least I went to sleep around 1, wish I knew how to handle my anxiety without drinking and control my drinking, good luck to anyone struggling like me, prayers
Hey Jeff! It’s definitely a struggle. The best thing for me is to try and slow down my obsessive mind from overthinking everything. I do this by reading some recovery literature, calling my sponsor or a friend in the program, listening to some guided meditation, going to a meeting etc. These are the basic recovery tools I’ve learned. One other thing… all the corny sayings like “one day at a time”, and the serenity prayer. FYI- I don’t want to make this sound like all the anxiety goes away and I’m happy joyous and free lol. No way! It just slows my thinking down enough to be able to get thru the “uncomfortableness” until it passes. Hope this helps!!
Our habits get soooooo hardwired. It’s almost like you have this voice inside saying, but hey, we drank yesterday and we lived to see another morning, we better drink again today, just to be sure.
Even making a change for the better, it challenges you, because you’re not used to it. That same voice will try to talk you out of the changes, and literally, only in an effort to keep you alive the way it did yesterday.
Have you considered creating new back up plans? Like, give yourself permission to choose drinking, but then give yourself a handful of other things that you’d enjoy at least that much. And then do one of those things just for the fun if it, before the feelings of anxiety even hit.
Apart from drinking, what are your favorite things to do?
Thanks
I’m a guitar player, so it’s hand in hand for that’s what I’ve created somehow, trying to find new ways of getting through, thanks for your post
