Goodbye, Hello Dry July

I begin my journey of sobriety tomorrow, having been flirting with the idea of a Dry July. I haven’t had a drink today but I am concerned that when the sun sets I will try to get in one last whiskey, a last hurrah. I will not punish myself if I do, but I will be disappointed. Is it weird to want to say “goodbye” to alcohol?

Not at all! It becomes your everything....your best friend, your lover, your comfort, your place to hide. My sponsor had me write a goodbye letter to alcohol. It was so freeing! I can't even describe how I felt when I read it to her and we burned it! Something I would definitely recommend

Thank you, that was beautifully said and I love the ceremony of the goodbye letter. I’ll try that out

I didn't know Dry July was a thing until today. That's awesome. But to answer your question- it's not weird to tell alcohol to kick rocks.

For me, it took a bit of a grieving process to acknowledge the fact that the one thing I thought always got me through, could no longer be a part of my life. I tied a lot of good memories and times of enjoyment to drinking my favorite drinks… little snapshots of happy times in my life. I genuinely loved the taste of my favorite drinks too. But once I fully fell into my addiction, it became a whole different world of pain, sickness, and self destruction. I lost all control and wrecked my life I had. It will always be that way for me now. I long to go back to when this wasn’t the case, but that isn’t reality. I have to honor the truth about me and alcohol now…it’s not what it used to be. It’s far more dangerous.
