Has anyone ever lost a job because of something they said when drunk?
No?
Like 90% of us have. Why we in recovery. It’s all good. The past is the past. Only kidding. Just stay sober it becomes no big deal. Sorry if that happened to you. It’ll be ok.
Thank you! I feel horrible I lost a job saying a horrible thing. I hate myself for it and am really low right now
Yup. Time heals all.
Chalk it off as a learning experience. As in, I’ve learned being drunk ain’t what I want to be. When sober rewards are endless.
Lost a job on the first day I went there intoxicated how stupid is that lol sometime ago
I think most of us have lost a job because of our drinking.
Lost a job and got kicked out of school on the same day because of my use a few years ago.
I lost 2 great jobs, and allowed pride (I’m too good to have to put up with this bs) to convince me to leave 2 more. Sobriety and humility make me love my life and my work is part of that. Not all of it like it used to be.
Yep. Well similar I got fired for stealing while drunk and high on cocaine. Bad days fade away to the good ones. Keep your head up
It happens a lot—I’m on the employer side of things and have fired more than a few. But here’s the thing—I find a lot of people end up with that as their trigger to change their life. Let it be fuel for you to pursue a life you love, with a job you love, and staying sober. Hope that’s not too preachy, just that it isn’t uncommon and that you can recover from it.
What about for being fired some something you said in the past and the report it to your new employeer. It’s a shame my past is still haunting me even when I’m trying to move forward
Most companies no longer give references, just confirm employment. It’s highly unlikely they will disclose anything to a new employer. There is just too much liability that you could go back to the current employer and claim they treated you differently because they knew you had alcoholism ( which is a protected medical condition under the ADA). Btw, alcoholism is a covered medical condition, but companies can still hold you accountable for your behavior while under the influence. If the behavior affected your job. They just can’t fire you based on finding out you are alcoholic. It’s a legal distinction thing. Feel free to PM me if you want more details.
Oh thank you for that but I’m talking about old friends I said rude things to during a black out that was pretty disgusting. And them contacting my employer. Am I just in trouble ? I start a new job Monday and I think I will get accused of saying nasty things from the past.
I see. We’re you on the job at the time you said those things? Or do these friends work for the same company? If the answer to both is “no” then it’s not job-relevant and as an employer I wouldn’t consider it. If the answer to either is “yes”, then it could be an issue.
It’s not job relevant. I said some really nasty and disgusting stuff in a black out. It was at a bar about a month ago and I start the new job Monday. I fear they will acuse me of being something awful
I’m so sorry—we’ve all been there. Hopefully it will blow over so you can apologize, move on, and not have it affect your job. Sending good vibes.
No but I’ve lost friends
i didnt really lose my job but i had to quit bcus i got my license taken away. and ive come close twice after that. the last time i had trouble like that they made me take an LOA. it sucks but its more common than you think. thts why im here trying to get sober. it helps to hear im not the only one going thru these problems with alcohol. Alcohol makes me feel confident and I can act like a jacka55 and not notice it.
