Has anyone seen the TV Show ‘Mom’ with Allison Janney? I’m 30 days sober today and realize that I’m down to one friend, my best friend. I don’t really know other people in Chicago. Do people actually form close bonds as a group of addicts and become close friends, or is that show completely off base?

People DEFINITELY form close bonds like that. I’ve been in and out of the rooms since 2013 and at one point, was so involved with my sober community that we had friday night game nights/movie nights, etc. Just a big group of young twenty-somethings, laughing hysterically at naughty phrases playing Cards Against Humanity, sober AF. it’s one of my happiest memories in recovery.
One of my past treatment centers is big into alumni coming to visit, and doing big get-togethers for all the past guests and their families who’ve came through their doors. It’s on 10-acres of beautiful land and they hold huge bonfires in the summer and do a fourth of july fireworks display. usually over a hundred people show up to that.
once you get involved in a home group that you enjoy, you’ll find people there that you enjoy being around. ask them to go out for coffee after a meeting. see if they know any other good meetings. let them know you’re looking for more sober friends in the community. help does not come without being asked for. best wishes.

My sponsor, two other AA guys, and I are on the golf course almost every weekend in the summer. We have a blast! My AA group is absolutely my family. They know more intimate details about me than anyone. If I would go missing (not be at meetings), they will track me down and make sure I’m ok. Good good friends from the rooms.
