Have you ever been to a sober open mic event?

Have you ever been to a sober open mic event? I went to one tonight. I went alone & didn’t see anyone I knew really. Took the bus since I don’t drive. I wanted to experience a clean & sober activity. At least I tried? I mean, the people that performed were neat. I feel bad that I didn’t really enjoy it. What other activities can I do around those that are clean and sober? I really do need to socialize more. I know it takes time to have a life in recovery. I feel like I’m not doing enough at the moment.

Instead of focusing on sober events, I just avoid drinking events. Places where drinking is the focus.

I was amazed at how many people just don’t drink. When we only hang out in bars, our perception is that everyone drinks. But if you start just doing things you enjoy you’ll find people with the common interest without the booze. For me I started with hiking, biking, yoga, cooking, dog park, etc. some people swear by the gym. I don’t care for it but it doesn’t matter what works for me. Find things that work for you.

I agree with what you’re saying. I guess I just don’t know what works for me. Been in recovery since last year and I only associate with those in NA, mostly. I don’t have any friends from there though. I mostly attend virtual meetings. My home group is virtual. I wish I had a friend or two. It would be nice. Thank you for your comment:)

You got on a bus and went to a sober open mic event…and you feel like you’re not doing enough?! I’d say take it easy on yourself and give yourself some credit! That takes some courage and shows some growth. I’m sorry you still felt the loneliness/disconnected feelings, but it’s not for lack of effort. Keep on putting in the effort. I trust you’ll find that friend or two when the time is right.

Personally, I have always had a hard time with "sober comedy shows" and the like. But I do like being with others in recovery in social settings.

Yeah you've done more than I have. I'm still a hermit. You're doing great!
