Having a hard time letting go of my former self

Having a hard time letting go of my former drinking self. I think a lot about how much fun I used to have and how carefree I was when I was drinking. I know it’s selective memory, but it still makes it difficult on the weekends. Anyone else go through this?

Yes, I was crying like a friend was dying… but I had to kill him in order to heal. Has this thought when I broke down to my GF

I definitely did when I first tried quitting years ago. I was in my mid twenties and everyone else my age was drinking. I had serious FOMO, and drinking gave me the false sense of confidence I felt I needed to be the social butterfly I always wanted to be, and I felt like without it, I couldn't have a social life. Thankfully, I eventually found much more genuine friends whose company I can enjoy without drinking, and who accept me no matter what. It's hard, you do go through a period of feeling like you've lost your identity, but you get stronger and wiser.

Oh my gosh yea! Sometimes i still feel like i cant go out to certain places or invites because i want to avoid alcohol or the event is centerd on drinking and stuff like that. I think theres a lowkey cultural aspect here in the u.s. in certain generations too i think.

YES. That’s one of the main reasons I’ve relapsed in the past. It’s difficult, but it helps me to focus on the things I like about myself now/when I’ve been sober before and to keep an image in my head of who I want to be. I know it’s easier said than done though, but there are MUCH better versions of ourselves yet to be discovered and created

Thank you all! I’m glad I’m not alone in this. I’m hoping this weekend will be easier and I wish you all strength and peace to get through the weekend sober as well!

You have to let your old self go.you will not make it.when you do your steps it will helps.

We didn’t become addicted overnight, so recovery is definitely a process. Time is a healer.
