Hello, I don't believe that I have a problem with drinking everyday, but I have a serious problem controlling how much I drink when I do and I constantly drink to excess. I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this and has any tips.

I'm a binge drinker too, I still had to quit all together because when I would drink I could never control it.

You aren't alone. Many of us here were more bender alcoholic than we were the drink to wake up, drink to function. I recommend going to a meeting. Your might find you are less different and more understandable than you think.

Have you read "The Doctor's Opinion" chapter of the big book? He talks about an allergy, where once you start, you are compelled to keep going. It's a key characteristic of an alcoholic.

I am a binge drinker too. When I was drinking I wouldn't drink during the week. I would drink on the weekends. I was always blacking out and sometimes started over in the morning. I've lost so many weekends because of it. Embarrassed myself falling or calling/texting people, my husband was my babysitter. I would hate myself for days and feel terrible. Such a viscous cycle. I'm on my third attempt to sobriety. I made it 9 months the last time. I'm at 25 days this time. Anyway, I relate to you situation. I consider myself an alcohol abuser vs an alcoholic but it's just words really. Whatever I call it doesn't matter. I needed to quit. I read binge drinking has worse effects than daily drinkers. If you ever need to talk I'm here.

P.S. I tried controlling it but I never could. I always ended up back in the same place. I have no off button. When that happens it's time to quit.

It doesn’t matter how often, what time of day or what you are drinking. None of that makes you an alcoholic. What the substance does to us and how we react to it is. If you only drank once a month but wouldn’t stop and acted a fool because of it… you got an issue. I would recommend going to a few meetings. I think you will see all our stories are different, but we have the commonality of not doing the right thing when drinking and drugging. Good luck man.

Yeah I was one of those people too and with drugs too. I could go days without or even weeks then boom back in the saddle and buckle up.. what I suggest if you feel you're not ready to totally quit because that's solely your decision. Something you need to want and ask yourself if you need that bad. Try limiting yourself to a certain amount but here's the kicker..if you go over that amount and feel the amount you had wasn't enough. Unfortunately you have a problem that you should look into. It's that simple. The difference between us and those that can drink socially or BEHAVE when they do. Are the ones who know control and how to cut themselves off when needed. That's the only difference. We just take it to the extreme everytime. Best to you and I hope you can figure this out before it gets to the point you'll need more help than you anticipated.
