help. what have you done to figure out who you are sober? i’ve been high from age 12-26. who am I? I have no idea. I know i’m creative and an animal lover that’s it.
I replied to your last post to sorta answer this question but also to add to that, me being 37 now...I just started really figuring out "who I am" a few years ago. It took being sober and clear headed to start and every slip up set me back. I believe life is here to shape and mold us through adversity and we have been running from it by using. We have a slight handy cap because of that but at least we are aware that there is a need to figure it out. I don't believe it is a random flick of a switch and bam now I know who I am, it is a process through elimination and also mostly growth and discovery. Journaling helps A LOT!
One thing at a time. One day at a time.
I do counseling once or twice a week. It's paid for through. Talking to somebody else on a weekly basis that's not one of my peers or friends, helps me get back honest input about the things I'm thinking about and going through. The counselor suggested I take a couple personality test. didn't personally like the results. But it sort of gave me direction to look at towards.
there's a power in not being in your mess anymore. You now have the ability to make choices with a clear mind. you can use your intuition on the habits you want to build to find out who you are.
I think one of the biggest blessings in recovery is getting to discover who we are and become the person we want to be. you say you are creative and an animal lover? Explore those interests more! For me, finding myself and gaining more confidence in who I am seems to also just come with age. My advice is to be patient and see this as an opportunity to explore your interests and discover who you want to be. getting to do all of that sober is a huge blessing...even if it does feel scary and overwhelming at times.
I replied to another post of yours. I suggest slowing down a little. May I ask what the rush is? When I got clean I had a thousand questions too. I've been getting the answers gradually over the past 5 years.
Your a creative animal lover. I'd say that's enough. Really your you and that's enough. There's more of you there then you realize. It will come when it's time. Being a creative animal lover is a really good start!!!
I think we struggle with our identity constantly.. in our addiction we may have been the “party guy/girl” and now that we are clean/sober out identity has changed.
I believe it will constantly change as we grow and become who we are meant to become. I think what’s important is we GET TO be who you want to be now that have a new life. Our story is ours and it’s up to us to decide how to write it.
I’m 43 and still trying to figure that out LOL….. great post by the way
