One of the coolest parts of re-listening to your favorite music after getting sober is catching new meaning and references to addiction. A couple of my favorite examples:
Panic! At the Disco-Camisado
“You’re a regular decorated emerency”… “sit bax, relax, relapse again”… “this was no accident, this was a therapeutic chain of events”
Cold War Kids-We Use to Vacation
“I kissed the kids at noon, then stumbled out the room. I caught a cab, ran up a tab on 7th and flower”
This whole song is essentially an alcholic’s confessional and the struggle with rationalizing his drinking: “still things could be much worse, natural disasters on the evening news. We still got our health, my paycheck in the mail”.
