Hey friends! The last two days have been quite the struggle. I’m still early on in recovery and for the most part everything has been going great. I recently began seeing someone and lately our communication has kind of been lackluster. I feel like I derive so much of my happiness by being with someone else that when things get slightly difficult I go into panic mode and can only fixate on that. Last night I got super into my head and really wanted to go to the bar but went to a meeting instead. Is it always this hard to be comfortable with yourself and be patient?
Hey Wyatt!
For me, it’s still difficult, but it has gotten a LITTLE easier. But it does take practice! That “one day at a time” phrase can be so annoying, but it’s so true.
When I’m having a hard time, I’ll often remind myself that if I can remain sober today, it’s still a win. My therapist told me “if you have one foot in the past & one foot in the future, you’re sh***** on today.”
Good luck to you!
It does get easier with time and working a program. White knuckling it will not work. Trust me… most of us have tried it. You need to ask yourself if dating is the best thing for you right now?. Sobriety is hard enough in the beginning, dealing with everything, is throwing another personality into the mix a good idea? You do what you think is best for you. In my opinion we need to fix ourself before rushing headlong into another person. Good luck man. Hope you find what you need.
Hey Wyatt! Great move to go to a meeting instead of the bar. Making right choices is what recovery is all about. Getting comfortable takes time my brother. We are re-learning so many bad habits, and re-wiring our stinking thinking. You did good brother! As for relationships, you know what “they” recommend. I’m not going to preach. Just be mindful of your priorities, and practice a daily program of recovery. Be patient with yourself
I appreciate all of your comments and feedback. It’s just such a foreign feeling right now. I spent so many years of my life interacting with people at the bar everyday and now that I have so much more time to myself I’ve struggled to adapt to that new feeling
