Hey new friends. I just had the painful talk after my third relapse with my parents. They are so hurt and it was an awfully hard conversation mostly due to the fact that they thought I had been sober for the past year and a half. They kept telling me how proud they were of me and I was lying right to their face. I feel so low right now. I still don't want to drink, but I just feel like the worst person. I've been to a meeting and am headed to another later tonight. Do any of y'all have any advice on what I can do? I know they just need time but I want to do something
Something that’s working for me?… Maybe try identifying your triggers, and see if there are some they can help you with? I was sober one month and then relapsed and my mom found the bottle when she was visiting and helping me recover. It was humiliating but I’m glad it happened. Relapsed again and came crawling across the country to detox under their care. I admitted how ashamed I was and asked their forgiveness, told them triggers and promised (and am doing) check ins every couple of days by text and weekly by phone so they can hear my sober voice. I let them know—honestly—how I’m doing and ask for prayers if necessary. Sharing gratitude lists w them is good.
Hi Mercer ,
First off i Want to say you are incredibly strong for being vulnerable and open about ur relapse , the shame and guilt following it can be so painful it causes u drink more , like u my story is relapse, i would start to build an amazing foundation with my parents just for me to relapse specifically binge time and time again, and the feeling of dread when i knew THEY knew was horrific , the anxiety and shame would eat me up inside , knowing i disappointed the only sople really supporting me , please forgive yourself & don’t give up, you can do this again, as many times as it takes
Don’t rush to fix things. Just show them you are making strides, and trying to regain their trust. We are all just humans, shame makes us do some crazy things. It will all play out fine, just give it time. You got this! I believe in you.
I love that!! I think that the check in is a great idea cause I isolated pretty dang good for a long time, so I think they'll appreciate that! Thanks!!
The feelings of shame and guilt are what I'm really trying to never forget, so I don't forget how I made everyone feel. I'm trying to move past those feelings, but trying not to forget how they affected my loved ones, if that makes sense
Thanks man! Time heals all!
All you can do now is stay sober today and not add anymore mistakes on to it. I have been there a lot. It’s a terrible feeling. I’m glad you told them
