Hi everyone! I’m curious if anyone here had issues

Hi everyone! I’m curious if anyone here had issues finding new friends that were sober. We’re you still able to keep your friendship with friends who used?

Yes! It’s one of the most difficult things for me. I posted on different apps asking who wants to start a sober group. I started a group text and we are supposed to meet up in January. Best of luck to you!

I actually had to change people, places, and things for me to continue to be sober. I also have had to distance myself from people who looked like me before recovery only bc I just couldn’t go back to that lifestyle.

I had to leave everyone and everything. It’s been worth it, but can be very lonely. Even 2+ years in my only “friends” are at AA. After 30 years of living that way I’m ok with it taking some time to readjust. It’s hard but hang in there.

I moved to a new city and with COVID am struggling to make friends let alone sober friends. That’s why I appreciate this app and the support is brings!

Yes I did I am grateful for the few friends I have that don’t drink😃

It really depends on what kind of friends you have. If your friends respect your boundaries and don't show up with alcohol at your door or beg you to come out with them party then these are probably good friends that you can probably keep. Just don't expect them to put the alcohol away if you come over to visit them.

You'll find out after a while that you don't really feel comfortable hanging out with people that are drinking while you're living a sober life. It can take a while to find sober friends. Sometimes they may not be in our age group. But they are sober and that's the kind of people we need to hang with as long as they are working a good program or they just don't drink at all.

Many changes happen when we choose a life of sobriety and one of those changes is the friends we hang out with. And the places we hang out at. Sometimes a few do some volunteering at treatment centers or go to different meetings that may help you to find some sober friends.

Don't hang out with too many new people though because you don't want them bringing you down if they make the mistake and think that they can drink again.
