Hi, I’m new to this and I currently don’t have a sponsor, but was wondering how I could go about meeting one? The religious component of AA is not really for me, so I was curious if anyone had any suggestions for finding a sponsor elsewhere? Thank you!!
Hey Ruby… I felt the same about AA when I started. I was apprehensive about the “religious” aspect of it. But since, I came to realize that a higher power is not religion or god. It is spiritual yes, but not religious. I just gloss over the god parts in meetings. AA is about so much more. Fellowship, accountability, learning through step work. There is a reason it has been around so long… it works if you keep an open mind and are willing to follow the suggestions given to you. Just my two cents but I wouldn’t cast off AA all together. As far as finding a sponsor, you need to go to meetings and ask. Find a woman’s meeting near you. Listen to the stories and ask someone you tend to vibe with. Good luck!
That's what everyone says Ruby. AA is not a religious program, not even close. It's a spiritual program. A spirtual solution is what most addicts and alcoholics require in order to recover from this illness. Sponsors are found in every room of alcoholics anonymous. They are ones who created the "Sponsor or closed mouth freind". If you arnt planning to recover from the illness then you shouldn't need a sponsor. A Sponsor's main purpose is to guide you through the 12 steps of recovery. Good luck
Thank you for the feedback
Thank you so much, Tim! That’s very helpful!
Thank you, Brett!
