Hi, I’m new here and would like to make some friends

Hi, I’m new here and would like to make some friends. I’ve struggled with trying to get sober in the past, and today is the first day I am actually trying to seek help. It’s hard to do it by myself mostly because it was difficult to even admit that I have a problem. I don’t drink everyday but when I do I don’t stop drinking until I’m really drunk. Since it isn’t necessarily a daily habit for me I thought it would be easy to quit, but the pressures of life really drive the temptation to get f’d up on the weekends. It’s also been hard because my partner likes to drink. He has gone temporarily sober with me a couple times, but I know he would prefer not to and then I feel bad for that. It’s also hard to say no when he does drink around me. Anyone here have some advice for that?

Hi Michelle and welcome! I also wasn’t a daily drinker, but when I did drink it was always a problem. Getting sober was the best thing I have ever done. As it relates to your partner, do you want him to not drink to be supportive of you? I do not think it is too much to ask to request that he not drink around you in early sobriety, it is hard enough without having it in front of you constantly. I don’t think you should feel bad if he opts to not drink around you or stays sober for a while to support you because he is making that choice. If he didn’t want to do it he wouldn’t. We all make sacrifices for our significant other’s at points in a relationship.

Wow. Did that hit home. I continued my relationship with my ex. Yes it almost drove me crazy. I had to end it for my serenity. It took a while for me to realize I had to do it for myself and my sobriety. You stay sober. I ask what do I have to change. They told me everything. My thinking was so crazy. I think it took me a while to feel normal. But when you start to grow in your sobriety you will know somethings have to end. You are beginning a journey that can possibly change your life. You deserve this. Focus on you and your sobriety

We are here for you. I am only on day 2 and also have a partner that drinks. But he can take days off, I never did. I did not get drunk every day but I felt it was mind time to wind down. I now see what a problem it is. You can do this! I am here to chat anytime mostly  You took the first step and looked for help, just like me.

Michelle ... you've taken THE right step. I was a wicked binge drinker. Never daily. Once a week or so. If I traveled a few nights in a row. But would sometimes a week or two off. But I found my episodes increasing in intensity over the corse of 15 years. I knew I was in trouble. So I get the binge drinking. When I quit my son was living at home. College student. He was loading the garage refrigerator up with beer. Had whisky in his room. I tolerated it for 6 months but I finally put my foot down and told him I don't want a single sight of it in the house. He can have it in his roomas long as I can't see it. Out of sight out of mind. So ... I think you need to take whatever steps are necessary to protect your sobriety.
