Hi I'm Amy, I'm a recovering alcoholic.

Today marks 161 days alcohol-free for me. I wanted to write and share some of my thoughts and feelings with whomever wants to continue reading.

It wasn't up until a huge tragedy that occurred on July 20th, 2021 that I finally made the choice to put alcohol behind me, forever this time. It took me until September 16th, 2021 to make that decision. I woke up feeling like total s@&! from heavily drinking Fireball and Jack Daniels days prior to this morning. I got up, grabbed the Fireball bottle and poured the rest out and said out loud to myself, “this is the day I begin my detox and that I quit drinking.”

The first 6 days were the hardest. Shakes, chills, no appetite, only just wanting to sleep. Come days after the hardest days, I started getting more of an appetite, I started feeling somewhat normal. My thought process was clearer and each day has continued to get better as I continue to work on what's ahead for myself and for my life. I chose to become sober myself! For my husband, for my two younger sisters (who are in my everyday life) and for everyone else. But most importantly, I made this choice to better my health, to better my life… FOR ME!

My husband begged me for so long, a year, 2 years, even longer, to quit. He said alcohol made me the devil, that I hated him whenever I had been drinking. I despised him. I always tried making it look as if he was crazy, tripping out, making things up cause I was "buzzed or drunk". In all reality and the truth, he was correct. He wasn't making these things up, he was being honest and truthful. I never wanted to hear it or listen to him because in my eyes, I didn’t have a drinking problem. I wasn’t ready to admit it to myself and was for sure not ready to quit. Thankfully, my husband and I are still happily married and together, but under different circumstances because of what transpired on that day in July.

I am thankful for so many reasons and will continue to make better decisions for myself, my family and the ones who mean the most to me. Cheers to my every second, every minute, every day moving forward of my journey in sobriety. It hasn’t been easy, but it is and always will be worth it.

You can lead a horse down to the water, but you can’t force the horse to drink it… I’m finally drinking the water my family and close friends have lead me to.

Wishing everyone here a Blessed day and journey through sobriety. We’ve got this! :muscle:

Thank you for sharing. What are the things you do to maintain your sobriety?

I help my sister I stay with around the house. Laundry, basic keeping the house clean, organized. I visit my best friend everyday or every other day depending on how I feel that day.

Great share. Thank you for it. Congratulations on day 161! You are doing great. Keep it up. Every day is a great milestone and accomplishment

Congratulations! Agree. You can take a horse to water, but cannot make it drink. Staying sober is so much easier than getting sober. Another self detox would certainly kill me! That there is enough to save me from the next drink. Thank you for sharing.

Congratulations

Your story is similar to mine but I wasn't so fortunate. I lost everyone and thing. I'm building myself back up now from but at a price of being alone. Take every day sober as a victory. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
