Hi. I'm new here. I made a decision this morning

Hi. I'm new here. I made a decision this morning that I don't want to drink anymore. After drinking to much alone lastnight and blacking out. I'm tired of telling myself that I can control it when I clearly can not. And it's just been getting worse and I'm drinking almost everyday, again. I don't want it in my life anymore and I am looking for some support to help me along the way. I've done it before and I know if I want this bad enough, and I do, that I can do it again. It's just to hard to do alone.

The opposite of addiction is connection. You do need lots of support and connection to make it in sobriety. This app is a start but I would try and get plugged into some in person meetings and get some fellowship. It is extremely helpful to be around people that get it, have ben there and done that, and will no way judge you for your shortcomings. It is a long journey but we’ll worth it.

Yes I have tried AA in the past but I found it wasn't for me. I have a hard time speaking in person and wasn't able to open up.
Social anxiety tends to hold me back sometimes.

Thank you and I have tried AA in the past but unfortunately wasn't able to feel comfortable enough to share my feelings.

Deanna, you can go to meetings and not share, eventually you might be ready. I REALLY didn’t want to go to the rooms but was miserable until I did. I get together with an AA friend to share just the two of us because he’s not into group sharing either. I know it’s uncomfortable at first, but it’s gets better. Everyone there has the same problem. Good luck.

Deanna, it is almost everyone’s story. I called AA the boozer loser group and I thought it was definitely not for me. I was so very wrong, like so many that are wrong. What ends up happening is we decide to continue to take beatings until we accept the solution that is right under our nose. I don’t get commission, so I say this only out of care. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the pain. Open your mind to the program. You don’t have to participate at all. Just say “pass” when it comes to your turn. Just listen. And don’t expect a miracle to happen at your first meeting. At some point though it’s bound to come and it is so amazing you won’t believe it. We don’t know what we don’t know, so we have to be willing and open minded.

Hi Deanna and welcome! There are lots of alternatives to AA for support: The Luckiest Club, Women for Sobriety, Dharma Recovery, SMART Recovery. I am part of The Luckiest Club and love the meetings because they are all online and you don’t have to speak if you don’t want to.

Welcome, Deanna! So glad you’re here. I just joined myself and have already found this community to be endlessly helpful - so much support, understanding and encouragement. You’re in the right place!

Thank you so much for recommending those alternatives. I will definitely check them out. I'm a single mother of five and it may seem like a excuse to some but it is hard to find time to attend face to face meetings. Online would be more convenient.

I understand. I’m not a mom, but I have a full-time job, am a full-time grad student, and a teaching assistant. It’s hard to make time to leave the house.

Welcome to your first step to a WAY BETTER LIFE.. AA isn’t for everyone but it sure helped me, there are many other programs as well some faith based, i.e. celebrate recovery and others. As for me what kept me sober was my one of my biggest character flaws PROCRASTINATING!! Lol. Seriously. In the first few days I would convince myself that in an hour I would let myself have a drink then after the hour passed I would do the same thing over again. I managed that way for the first week then convinced myself I would have a drink tomorrow but not today!! That worked even better because my “ism” would talk to me (and it does talk) and ask me if it was tomorrow yet and I would argue with “it” that NO ITS TODAY AND TOMORROW I SAID I WOULD BUT NOT TODAY!! And since it’s always today I haven’t had to drink or use ANYTHING for over 4yrs I also give a lot of credit to the people of my recovery group for whom I hold dear for without them too I don’t know if I could have done it.. good luck and god bless
