Hi there! I’m a new member and really have not started yet. I’m scared and need the motivation to slow down on my drinking. Any tips and really would like to be able to relate with people more
“If you want what we have and are willing to do anything to get it you are ready to take certain steps”
Being scared is normal. Walking into the rooms and asking for help was one of the hardest things I ever did. I needed to face that fear and just do it.
The app “meeting guide” is free and gives times and locations of AA meetings near you. Detoxing, depending on how heavily you drink, can be dangerous. An ER will admit you and help with the withdrawals. In patient rehab sometimes is needed to jump start recovery.
Just know you are not alone! We have been there. The anxiety, fear, shame, guilt…. We have all gone through it. We do recover! It is not easy, but you can do it.
You have to make up your mind 100 percent. If you go into it 50, 50. Then it won't work. What made me realize was all the mischief I caused and who I saw in the mirror. It wasn't the man who I am now. That is your foundation. From there you are gonna need a support group to have your back. With those tools you will be well on your way. If you need someone to talk send me a friend request and we can chat.
Treatment was a great motivation for me
Stay small. Don't get ahead of yourself. Just find that 1 "win" every day. Can be something simple, like reading a book you've been putting off, organizing your closet, taking a long walk.
Those little wins, like days, will add up
Being medically detox was the only way I was able to stop. My addiction was so powerful. Now I have an entire recovery team, counselor, medication doctor, recovery coach, AA meetings, and several recovery friends. It can be done but you have to really want it.
Forget trying controlled drinking, doesn’t work believe me I tried it all. Counted the bottles out figured it out to have enough for the day but it was all gone before I knew it.
Get involved, Reach out, get to meetings. Good luck.
