7 months ago I met a woman who was ready to commit to her program of recovery. She dove in head first and we became fast friends. She was looking for a sponsor, and deep down I wanted to work with her, but ultimately she chose someone else. I set aside my pride (as best I could) and continued to develop our friendship. Her sponsor ended up going out, and she went through a difficult time dealing with the aftermath of emotions that left behind. I could relate, as I had recently walked through a similar situation. So, of course, I continued to show up as her friend, and support her with my own experiences.
Fast forward to today … after a conversation only God himself could have orchestrated, along with hearing some hard truth about where she was at from another sober woman, she asked me to work the steps with her. I GET to sponsor her. God had a plan the entire time. If I had interjected myself in the beginning (like I wanted to), she may never have reached a point of feeling she could trust me. This time has allowed us, not only an opportunity to build our friendship, but to guide us to a place of trust and faith, knowing we will show up for another. I am so honored to help guide her through the steps, along with her higher power. Sobriety is a gift, and a choice. There is a solution, IF we choose to take it.
