To not feel alone and find a safe place volunteer at a retirement home if available to share holiday spirit with people who don’t have anyone else too. I have heard some of the most amazing life stories and made great connections with people that just want to share and talk. You never know the nuggets of knowledge you’ll get.
1- Take a sober buddy if possible. If not, let some people in your sober network know what you're walking into so they will answer if you call and/or can call to check on you.
2- keep a (non alcoholic) drink in your hand at all times; if people see you're already drinking something two things happen a- they are less likely to offer you a drink, and b- it makes it easier/less awkward to refuse. Double fist if necessary
3- take your own vehicle so you can leave (or bolt) if and when you're ready or if things get uncomfortable. Personally, I'm good being at events but once it gets late and everyone gets hammered it's no fun anymore. Also, at that point nobody's going to remember when you left, but they will know you were there at some point.
Good luck
Ah ok. That’s kinda far for me. Looking for something in the area.
Lock in some meeting dates, have dark chocolate
on hand, get as many numbers as you can and call new people as well as old timers and say hi. Theres a guy called Herb K that has made a huge impact for me in recovery this year his website has tons of resources you may find it to be awesome as well here is his podcast file:
Or just download Anchor and look up Herb K, he is also recorded on YT doing weekly live Zoom meetings. The reason I like him so much is the deep dives on meditation and expansive 4th step format discussions
Wow! Thank you so much for all of this information. Also, dark chocolate on hand at all times.
Avoid them.. haha
That’s my plan..
I have never been to a meeting
I think I’ve worked up the nerves to try now, as long as I don’t have to talk! I’m in the Birmingham/Bloomfield area.
Hey Bridget! The holiday season (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years) is sometimes called the Bermuda Triangle. It’s easy to get lost. What always helps me when I start feeling lost is having a big phone bank of people to text and call around the clock. Just remember, you are a badass, but even badasses need friends! You’re doing great! Keep it up!
OK so I’m just coming back after 30 years what is your “Why”?
Pray and have faith in God, and don't be your own worst enemy! (Preaching to myself as well) Remember who put Christ in Christmas!
My situation is identical to yours. It’s always the Chinese Buffett
followed by a walk along the river. But, more seriously, I try to find something quest and spiritual to do. I sit by the river or I go for a hike. Getting out and being with yourself brings peace I think. Hope this helps.
Solid! Except I’m a weirdo that doesn’t like Chinese food, lol.
I think the burrito joint might be open, you can take that with you at least
Please call me if you want 513-510-1371. I have many resources and can send you stuff via email.
Your why is your motivation. Is it yourself, your health, your family, your drive for another day
Spending less time with family, my father raised us around alcohol and I don't remember a Christmas since 12 year old (and bootcamp lol) that I did not drink for Christmas. Dinner, gifts, leave. Stay strong and good luck!!
That’s so awesome Simon!! Great advice for us all … love this !!
It’s hard to step in that doorway!!! But when I did for the first time the people there instantly welcomed me and the anxiety disappeared too!!
I want to thank everyone for all the tips and advice! I really appreciate you all taking time to share.
Continue my contact with God, step work, meetings, and spending time with others in recovery. I do go to more meetings during the holidays cause it tends to be my hardest time of year. But I stay in the pack and stay busy.
