Holidays

If anyone would care to share tools they plan on using to survive the holidays, I would love to add some to my tool box! Thanks! :christmas_tree:

Hi Bridget! I have a photo of a list of things, but I can’t post it in a reply. I can post it in an original post, so I’ll do that in a minute. It’s a bit hard to read. Hopefully you can blow it up and it will be of help!

Thank you!

Lots of AF beverages, have a text group or individuals that you text regularly for check-ins before/during/after, drive yourself so you can escape if need be, take breaks (in the bathroom or another room), breathe.

Start by not caring what people think of you. Take care of your sobriety the way it needs to be. That means if you have to come late, leave early, take breaks, or hard pass, so be it. Sobriety/Recovery first. Don’t test it. Make it precious. Be selfish if you need to. You have the right. You are doing what’s right.

Love this reply Shawn! The other ideas are nice ways to make it easier, but the bottom line is we need to make our sobriety top priority. Thanks for the empowering message Shawn

The best advice is to drive yourself. You can always leave any situation. Have a sober friends number on speed dial. Pull this app up and read before a trigger is even happening. Stay positive keep the mind busy on good thoughts. We can do this. I say that a lot so people can get the idea that they don’t have to do this alone. WE CAN DO THIS!!! Today 90% of the people I hang with are sober. It always wasn’t that way. I learned slowly that I couldn’t hang with my old friends. I will be around people drinking for the holidays and they are family. Good luck let the feeling out don’t keep them in. Happy holidays.

Great advice!

Thank you; appreciate it!

I just saw a pic and you’re at 12 oaks. Do you go to meetings in Oakland county?

This seems to be a big one. Thank you!

I use my mental health recipe card: morning meditation, a workout, coloring, lots of breathing exercises.
It got a little overwhelming a few days ago so I went and tried ax throwing for an hour. Wow what a fun stress reliever

Mental health recipe card! I like that!

Ax throwing terrifies me though lol

Have you ever tried a smash room? Really fun too and no ax involved.

Always remember your “why”
It is great to bring you back to being grounded and mindfully aware of the situation.

That’s a great piece of advice. Lots on this thread but mostly for parties and gatherings. I just want to survive the emotional aspect. Being sober, having no family alive, no where to go. My situation is kind of opposite. I don’t need exit plans or mock tails I just need to not drink and not feel sorry for myself.
