I’m dog sitting / house sitting for some friends tonight and I just discovered a bottle of vodka in their freezer. I’m feeling thrown off and kind of upset because they’ve been clued into my sobriety journey since day one so I guess I’m hurt that they overlooked this when they asked me to help them out. I already don’t love being in a big house an hour away from home all by myself and now there’s a bottle of booze screaming at me from the kitchen. I feel strong enough to overcome the temptation but it’s definitely messing with my head and I’m feeling angry. My friends do have a ton going on with two toddlers and busy lives but I feel like this is a big miss on their part. On one hand, we haven’t had the chance to catch up in awhile so I haven’t talked to them about what I’ve learned are my triggers or what situations make me feel unsafe, but on the other hand I went to rehab 9 months ago so I didn’t think I’d have to ask my closest friends to make sure their house was dry for my visit. Spinning out a little…
You said you went to rehab 9 months ago so you got this!! Stay strong! Play the tape all the way through! Also, non alcoholics think hey, you quit so you quit, done deal. They have no clue it’s a day to day battle! I’m sure it was just an oversight on their part. But like I said, you got this meja!

Thank you! You make a good point, it’s just an oversight and I know if I bring it up with them they will feel terrible about it. Just gotta stay strong tonight and make a mental note that this is always something to make sure of before I’m alone in someone else’s house. We can’t assume that people will always anticipate our needs. Gotta speak up and create out safe space. Thanks again
Dump it.
Leslie. I hope it all turned out well. You got this. Do not blame this on your friends. It’s your struggle not theirs. Day after day after day, we try to blame someone else for our down falls, take ownership. We will always have something to pop up that will challenge us, we ultimately make the choose.
Do I wish all Temptations were taken away from us,? absolutely, but that’s not life.
I have never needed a real "bottle in my face" excuse to get loaded. I could get loaded because it's been a rough day, or because it's a beautiful day, or because I'm bored/lonely/annoyed or because it's Friday, or Saturday or Tuesday.
I hope this turned out okay.
Back in 2020 I think I was, I went to visit my mom out of state. Everyone was drinking except me. I wasn't mad about it. I'm trying to pick my words carefully here. They are not responsible for me or my triggers, I am. You can't expect normies to understand, they are not like us. Next time ask them to make sure the house is dry.
I say pour it down the drain. Tell them you did when they get back and give them $ to replace it.
You need to play the scene all the way forward. What happens if you pick up a drink? Only you can answer that. There's no reason to believe that this time, things will be any different. That's the big lie of alcoholism. That this time, everything will be okay. But it never is, is it?
And then when you wake up, if you wake up at all, you will be greatly disappointed and have to start all over again carrying more guilt around with you than you did before. It's a big fat lie!
Stop Believing the LIE!
If you have someone from the program that you trust, you should give them a call right away and talk to them about this. This is the reason why we have sponsors and Alcoholics Anonymous. They get us over the bumps on our new journey.
Hang in there. Let us know how you’re doing.
Joe that's a superb idea!
Pour it out. Be honest about it with them. Not worth agonizing over.
I totally understand where you are coming from. Same situation kinda happened to me and at first I was really upset at them more. Only because I thought I was clearly over it. But I wasn’t. I talked to my friends about it. And they understood my no alcohol policy but totally forgot to take the vodka out their cabinet. Having someone to change their lifestyle when I’m around is rough and I didn’t understand that point of view of their side. Hopefully they forgot to take it out of sight for you. Clearly they didn’t do it on purpose since they trust you enough to be there.
Stay strong! You got this!
You got this you got 9 months down in the books!
You will have liquor always around you. You just don’t drink anymore simple as that
Pour it and move on. Hope this turned out ok. I do think this sounds a little selfish though. "How could they overlook this one bottle of booze in the freezer?" Just because we are in recovery doesn't mean everyone around us is constantly thinking about us being in recovery. The world doesn't revolve around us. I got upset when I sold my house and had to live with my in-laws for a couple months. They had a prescription bottle on the kitchen counter and I was upset even though it was antibiotics lol. My wife asked them to put it away somewhere because seeing a pill bottle is a trigger for me and they had no idea. Then I thought about how ridiculous it was for me to be upset about it. It's not like they are walking around all day thinking about me and my triggers lol. We need to just be grateful we still have friends and family to begin with. Hope this didn't come off harsh, just my experience and I like to tell it how it is because people being honest with me keeps me sober and people enabling and coddling me always leads to relapse. They will understand I'm sure. Dump it!
I love the line “play the tape all the way through.” Solid advice and well stated.
Triggers happen all the time! Its not about the situation but how we react! Wishing you the best with your journey!
Great suggestions. I “play the tape” constantly throughout the day. And I call and text people. Hang in there.
