How do you deal with the loneliness of sobriety? I got randomly irritated this Saturday night because I couldn’t be with my friends at the bar, and yet another evening watching Netflix feeling like a rotting corpse on my couch.
It can be tough but you can make friends in recovery. Hang in there...the bar scene always ends up with some sort of drama eventually. I learned to appreciate the peace in my life.
Time for new friends, friend
I keep hearing, “don’t get boredom/loneliness confused with serenity”.
But also the VERY BEST solution to this i have found is CONNECTION CONNECTION CONNECTION. Period my friend. Get numbers. Txt ppl call people. Share. Hug people. Connect with other humans on every level. Plus get some hobbies and passions maybe the ones from your child hood and go do it! You’re not alone! Rooting for you
Attend meetings, Sober social events and using the 1000 lb phone and call people
I'm not participating in a 12-step program, but I do attend a weekly AA meeting that draws about 200-300 people. It helps me feel less alone in this, while still being relatively anonymous. If you're not interested in a program, you do risk someone trying to push you into it, but most people accept that you're not into it. I went to this meeting last night, and ended up going to dinner with a few people afterwards.
What he said..go to a ton of meetings…go early, stay late..help clean up..find out what’s goi g on after the meeting
I’m right there with you……21 days, I’m changing people, places and things so now I have nothing to do cause I can’t hang with old friends….. what’s helped me is I try to work the weekends, make extra coin, gets me out of my apt, and I play video games, it takes me out my reality
lol…. Also, after a meeting I try to find someone to grab ice cream or coffee with
Loneliness really hit me hard this weekend too, you’re not the only one my friend. Yesterday was extremely tough for me.
Went to my first meeting today! So many new connections.
Turns out the boredom we feel is often just being at peace, but we don’t recognize that because a lot of us are used to chaos.
This is so relatable.
Feel you there. Just enjoy it. Learning to be alone and liking it is a big part of being emotionally stable.
I can totally relate, my friends all drink, however, I have noticed that they cut back a lot or nothing when they are around me, but it’s still difficult.
agreed
Go to lots of recovery meetings. Through time I’ve met friends that I cherish, trust and always have my back. I felt exactly like you do in early recovery but now I have so many healthy friendships that I have several options daily to to do something fun.
Still, along with the peace there is a sense of disconnect. Loneliness is a recovery killer. Just to have someone to talk to helps tremendously, someone who actually shows an interest in you. Yet, it easy to substitute attention and affection for a drug or drink.
Ethan! Welcome buddy! You’re not alone! As not to confuse loneliness, I’ve been dealing with it for about a year now that I’ve stopped chasing to be loved. Sometimes I just wanted to be done with life. Yank the wheel to the left… but what helped me is fellowshipping before and after meetings. Getting a home group. Sharing at group level. Getting phone numbers. Having a sponsor who invites you to the meetings he goes to. Going to mens meetings. Getting a service commitment like Secretary or coffee guy, or greeter… I recently joined a local YPAA committee. Which stands for young people of Alcoholics Anonymous. In California we have them by county(I’m still
Learning how it works) but so far there are tons of cool activities in AA that are on the weekends. Basically every weekend there is some fun event going on that has alcoholics like me to hangout with. I’m very grateful where I got sober at. I tried the meet up apps and it was fun but everyone drinks.
Also, I’m learning that I’m going to be around others who drink, I need to look at it like this; what can I bring to the event rather then what I can take from it…
Some this up… get to meetings… clean house help others, the rest will come… in the meantime don’t drink or use. Self love…
Hope you’re doing better now!
This could be a negative, but it works for me so I thought I would share:
I like to join political clubs/town halls and help participate in community service. One good tool to connect is Meetup or churches. Political clubs/town halls sounds silly, but at a local level it’s more about bettering your community(National politics is a different animal.)
I feel you I’m getting so sick of staying home watching tv reading books it’s been making me want to get high so bad lately . I’ve been extremely lonely bored and depressed I don’t know how much longer I can take it . I know how you feel though it’s very frustrating
