How do you find open minded meetings?

I’m a trans girl and my last experience with a 12 step group was a christian based one near me. (northwest GA for context) the place wasn’t very accepting of me and the nearest lgbt specific meetings are in atlanta which is a while away, how do you know a place will be more accepting/find places that are? i got sober on my own but i’d just really like some community yk?

My suggestion? Start a new meeting yourself that is open to lgbt. I’ll bet you’ll be shocked at the amount of people that feel exactly the same way.

Ask your sponsor how to get started

The meetings for the younger crowd /teens tend to be more accepting and progressive from what I can tell. Plus, it can be more comforting and helpful to be around your peers.

Hey Lauren! Welcome! Congrats on your sobriety! I hear similar things from others in certain parts of the country. I can understand why you would feel uncomfortable. Have you tried zoom meetings? They do have some specifically for LBGTQ. You can also join a zoom meeting from more open minded zip codes. Either way, you have my support!!

how would someone go about doing that? would i have to have like accredited counselors or a building rented out or something? or can i just put up an ad and some signs and hope people show up lol

i don’t have a sponsor

i’ll try and find some and see what they look like

2 alcoholics and a big book is all it takes to start a meeting. Reach out to your local central service office for more information and to learn about other meetings

I know of a really good lgbtq meeting that’s on zoom. NYC mustard seed and it’s every night at 9pm Eastern time. That’s the meeting I counted days in. A very diverse and accepting group.

And try the many paths meetings even if you’re from a more traditional background these people are more likely to be more accepting of any kind of diversity

Mustard Seed 9pm eastern time. Every night, LGBTQ Zoom id 676 475 2267 and there is no password

i mean that sounds great but i feel like it lacks the accountability of having people actually there with you who know you, like if i were to relapse it would be a little too easy for me to fake it on a camera for thirty minutes and then go back. i’ll probably have to look into that tho because not a lot of people are around like i said lol

I see these people every day. Sure I could lie? But they can tell. It’s easy to tell who is lying even through camera. And I’m closer to those people than anyone I know in person. It’s a good start if you are feeling lonely and lacking people that understand around you. And eventually you can build a community that’s in person or find a group that works for you. My home group is actually the morning mustard seed meeting. None of those folks would let me bullshit my way through my program :heartpulse::heartpulse:

But I do hope you find something in person that vibes with you!!! Cause that is a whole other feel:heartpulse::pray:

Lauren,
I’m going to ask my sponsor this morning on exactly how you start a meeting, In the mean time, I sent you a friend request the other day. I do think until then zoom meetings are an incredible option. I did them during COVID and they saved my recovery.

Looks like Meghan has given you a great lead! You need to start somewhere, and the zoom meeting in NYC is a great place to start. All it takes is one or two connections that you can relate to. Recovery is about taking suggesting a, stepping out of your comfort zone, and be willing to try new ideas. Let’s go get healthy :peace_symbol:❤‍🩹

I mean talk to your sponsor and maybe try and figure something out OR try the meeting guide app, it’s super helpful

LifeRing can be good. They’re online though. They’re secular.
