I’ve been fighting alcoholism since 2014. While I’ve successfully been able to reduce my alcohol intake in the past couple months, I’ve not had much success in longevity. I just want some advice or other opinions: what motivates you to continue your sobriety?
I struggle to find a reason to be sober, even though my body is heavily suffering from it
Some days I really struggle, now more with the emotions and loneliness I was masking before with booze.
Not drinking is just out of spite some days. I remember when I was hospitalized my dad came and stayed the night with me. I remember coming in and out of delirium and looking over at him hunched up in a very uncomfortable chair trying to sleep and thought “never again.” I decided to actually stop drinking that moment.
I still struggle with life, and it is very difficult, nothing is good. But I don’t drink anymore. That’s just my ungraceful little tidbit on motivation.
While life will always have its ups and downs, I find when I'm sober the ups are so much more enjoyable and the downs are so much easier to navigate. Continuing my journey in recovery has helped me learn to better appreciate and cherish the good times, and I continue to learn tools to help navigate the challenges life brings.
When I feel tempted to drink I remind myself of all of this. It's a simplistic way to look at things but it's been working for me. One day at a time
I hope you find your motivation- you are worth all the great things that sobriety brings!
I found adding some secondary goals that are easier to achieve by not drinking. For example diet and exercise. Seeing positive changes helps keep me from wanting to end up on the wrong side a vodka bottle again.
I motivate myself to stay sober for me first and foremost. I remember the health issues drinking created. I remember the horrible anxiety and depression. I remember letting the people down that I love. I remember not being able to pay bills on time or even care at all. And I just don’t want that way of life. Hope this helps a bit. Keep trying. For you!
In my experience, if you want to completely abstain from alcohol, you'll need have a spiritual awakening then carry the message to other alcoholics. I know alot of people who've done this and recovered, myself included.
If you struggle to find a reason to be sober, then why do you want to be sober?
Re read your last sentence… that should be reason entirely!
That’s a dumb question. Obviously it’s difficult no need for tricky questions
I agree that quitting is difficult. I was asking why she wants to be sober in the first place.
