How has it been getting sober and trying to keep up with the same circle of friends? I feel as if since becoming sober friends aren’t as apt to reach out. Just looking for some insight!! Thanks
I’m six days away from my year of no booze within three months of me telling people I stopped drinking completely. They totally left my life 100% and we’re talking about people that have been my friend for over 30 years. What’s gratis I realized that for years I haven’t had things in common with these people that didn’t center around a Events and drinking at events. Once I took the drinking at the event out I realize they just want me to be an asshole just like they’re an asshole and they can’t feel comfortable being an asshole. If I’m sitting there sober which makes them feel uncomfortable, which it makes it their problem not mine. It’s very hard to make new friends. I jumped into volunteering and animal welfare and I’ve made two really good friends out of that but it’s a completely different type of friendship. We don’t talk every day and we bond over things that we have in common that aren’t drinking. It’s hard it’s a struggle, but it feels so much better than the phony.
Yea definitely lost my whole circle. Everyone I know knows I’m the guy they call for laughs. Because I’m the guy that says “hold my beer, watch this”. No one calls me anymore after I disclosed I’m totally sober. Think my twin has actually called me 3 times this year. I have to initiate all the communication. So I’m building my new circle now!
You would think it’d be easy to find sober friends out there with so many of us in recovery.
I am a lucky one that my circle of friends remained in tact. I had to make the commitment that my problems with alcohol was just that…MY problem. They all support my sobriety. It could be that my group is all 50+ years old and we don’t go out to party. My sponsor told me very early “those that matter won’t mind, and those that mind don’t matter” and that has held true. As addicts I think we need to get out of our own head and make those friendships in the groups we are now around. Be the one to ask people to hang out, go places, do things. We miss 100% of the chances we don’t take.
