has anyone else gone through this? your significant other that constantly/everyday drinks (in front of you)? how do/did you deal with this? I’m having a rough time with it..
Yes! At first she wouldn't do it in front of me. Would go out when I was on hunting trips. But she would mix her drinks with soda on her way home and act like she wasn't drinking in front of me. On holidays she would. Then she just stopped caring and did it all the time in front of me. I asked for no booze in the house and kept finding it. Her excuse was, she shouldn't have to be boring because I was. Needless to say I had to end it. But I get it, it's super hard and frustrating. Not to mention inconsiderate
I finally told her I didn't want to deal with it and I shouldn't have to either. My salvation, sobriety and all the progress comes first. If it didn't then things won't work out. Have you tried talking to them.
I do all the time it builds a wall in your relationship. No easy answer.
yes, many times. it always turns into a fight. when i first started this journey my SO told me she would not drink at events we both attend. turns out that only meant weddings and bbqs? we went to a concert a week ago (a band she liked) she got drunk, lied about what she was drinking saying it was a seltzer when it was liquor ..(why???) i have 2 months currently, and she has drank in front of or in the next room every day with no
regard to how that effects me, because “i’m the one with a problem”… it’s become a point of contention, and i even want to say resentment
touché, it’s creating all sorts of problems. i feel it’s making staying sober significantly harder for me overall. it’s so often talked about, it’s 9:15 am we just finished breakfast and is already talking about drinking earlier than usual today ?!? why even mention that to me? i feel like my boundaries are blatantly disregarded
Stay strong on your journey! You have to come first for a little while you work out the demons and find new boundaries. People who ignore your boundaries are straight up not worth having in your life. Try talking it out, but if the pattern continues…
A good sit down chat and finding out if they really support your sobriety is key. At least it was for me. I also had to realize that the addiction was my issue, not anyone else’s. Living in Milwaukee, drinking is a part of everything… literally I can’t go to a kids birthday party without booze being there. I just know I need to be strong and keep my yard clean. I always make sure I have an escape route, and if I feel uncomfortable I walk away. Now if she drinks I make sure she gets home safe. It is different for everyone and ultimately, only you can make the decision of what is best for you.
it’s continuing literally as we speak LOL. i have to work on putting myself and needs first, i tend to put other people first
The process can be painful because you’re confronting all the reasons you drank. You’ll come out the other side better and more equipped I promise!
at first i didn’t understand what you meant but you’re right about building a wall !!
thank you for the encouragement
Go to any kind of meetings every day.it wii get you out .and make it better.surly things will change because you will not put up with it.
For me, I had to move out and be away from it. We didn’t break up and are still together, but I couldn’t stay sober around someone who took shots every day and had booze in the house.
It sounds like your SO if having a hard time respecting your boundaries- it might help to step away for a little bit to focus on your sobriety. It gets a lot easier when you’re not having it right in front of you all the time
