How to stop “Self pity”?

Hello love,
I used to be on the self pity train a whole lot. I realized it was just making me miserable! I had to get out of myself to really get off that train. I come on here and read the stories and try to contribute as much as I can. I share my recovery story to whomever needs to hear it. I write to get stuff out of my head. And I remember the hardest times of when I was using so that, even though it makes my heart hurt, it stops me from using again and it keeps my head in the game.

You're here for a reason and you're far from worthless. I know those feelings can be overwhelming through. I go outside for a walk if this is happening and it seems to help me process things better. It doesn't mean you are being self pity on yourself. Be nicer to yourself.

The quickest way is to make a list of all the things you’re grateful for, and the best way is to help others in recovery. (Or anyone in need.)

nice :+1::heart_decoration:

Do stuff for other people, helpful stuff at that. I often fall victim to self pity, because I love to think about myself and my problems. When I look for opportunities to help in all areas of my life I find that I’m not thinking about myself during those times and I feel better because I’m not focusing on myself. I call people and ask them how they are doing, and just listen, that is an easy way to change the channel.

Yes! Journaling is key!

I’m glad you posted this. I struggle with this myself both in the beginning of my recovery and today. I believe it will be an ongoing struggle for some of us.
We sometimes feel like “the victim” and sometimes we actually are the victim but there comes a point when being the victim our living our lives in self-pity is unproductive and we have to make a decision just like we did we got sober/clean. Is it making your life unmanageable? If yes, try and take action to make the necessary changes in your life.
