How to stop “Self pity”?

Today is one of those days. I wish I didn’t have to deal with this, but we can’t pick and choose what we struggle with in life. Some people struggle with addiction and some don’t.

I know gratitude helps self pity, any other tips?
Just feel worthless, inadequate, and like part of my purpose is to just mentally struggle it makes it hard for me to be positive.

You have to forgive yourself and know your worth. We all make mistakes and are not perfect but that doesn’t mean we are deserving of a happy human existence.

We are not

Hmm I also struggle with this. Yes, Daily Gratitude Lists help, My Sponsor and I send a 5 point daily gratitude list and this helps me to consciously aware of the blessings God granted me with. I will send more thoughts later, i get to cook dinner tonight

Hi Cindra, I feel exactly how you feel, my only motivation right now is, to simply make it through the day. Making life long decisions seems and is not realistic at this particular moment. All WE can do, is take it day by day, maybe a week, but not months or years from now.

Self pity sucks, I feel the exact same emotions as you. All I am trying to do every day (well some days I don’t do anything), is to make the tiniest steps to make a difference in my life. I despise being in this state, I even had thoughts of potential harm to myself.

But “F” that I am not giving up.

You’re human. We are wired to feel. If you’re feeling things that’s great! But remember you are human. :pray:t2:

When I worked the 12 steps I was taught how to surrender my ego/pride first. Then I studied my past and learned to recognize patterns of unhealthy behavior. Then I righted the wrongs that I discovered. All of this aided me in forgiving myself and truly understanding serenity. Peace of mind is bliss, after having had the depressed and anxiety laden brain for so long. You can get there, but it takes time and work.

I’m having one of those days too

Gratitude is a pretty good measure for how humble you are they kinda go together your as grateful as you are humble.

Helping someone who needs help. Wether another alcoholic or not. It’s impossible to be in one’s self when doing something selfless

What's worked for me whenever I've felt this way is to try to make sure I'm eating 3 times a day, get out in the sunlight for at least 15 - 20 minutes. Try to stay busy with positive activities. Even if it's just straightening up or cleaning a window. I know these things are hard to do though if you're depressed but for me they helped

Lots of therapy for me

You have to do things that make you feel worth it.

“Gratitude” comes in your own time. Don’t feel inadequate because every one in meetings constantly go on about “how grateful” they are. It’s expected to say that to look “spiritual “. No one is grateful all the time. Even if they pretend to be in meetings to look good to everyone else. It’s BS. Recovery to me means being honest and real. And I’m not always “grateful” . I’ve been horrifically abused most my life and I am not grateful about it and no amount of a fourth step means I have “a part” or owe those monsters an “amends”. Recovery is about being real and honest with yourself and every one else. Not speaking the lingo to look good in meetings. I’m just saying.

Is what your feeling “self pity” or rightful anger?

I have been there dam near 1 million times I don’t think it’s so much dwelling on self-pity, I think of a lot of us just question how are we chosen to have this over our life where others do not why did we have to get the bad part in the people that live well every day can do whatever they want and nothing phases of them where it consumes us There’s nothing wrong with you wanting to know or feeling down and out you’re a human just asked God to take that from you

I try to focus on small accomplishments that I can enjoy doing, and build on those. For me it shifts the focus from 'what is wrong with me?' to 'what can I do today?'. It was a slow process, but I feel good about me now.
