I am grateful to not be handicapped by the idea of a higher power watching over me and doing things for me, when he feels like it.
I believe that being grateful is an action. And that action is set in motion by other actions. The actions exist because of eachother. Without one, the other falls flat. Like one person on a teeter totter.
Without God, I’m more aware of how my actions affect others and affect my surroundings. I don’t expect God to save our planet, so now I’m more careful about what I throw away and I eat less meat. I don’t expect God to save humanity, so when tragedy comes, I don’t send thoughts and prayers; I give rides and meals etc and help where I can. Without God, I can truly understand accountability, knowing that whatever I do, nobody is going to lessen the consequences of my negative actions, and no empty promises of "ten fold coming back to me" for doing the right thing.
I am grateful that the only thing I have as a "higher power" is the experiences of the group, no matter how different from mine they may be, to give me a better way to cope, and real life, real time, help when I need it.
And coffee.
And sunshine.
And the ocean.
And all the great writers.
And my sponsor, Chuck D.
