I am grateful to not be handicapped by the idea

I am grateful to not be handicapped by the idea of a higher power watching over me and doing things for me, when he feels like it.

I believe that being grateful is an action. And that action is set in motion by other actions. The actions exist because of eachother. Without one, the other falls flat. Like one person on a teeter totter.

Without God, I’m more aware of how my actions affect others and affect my surroundings. I don’t expect God to save our planet, so now I’m more careful about what I throw away and I eat less meat. I don’t expect God to save humanity, so when tragedy comes, I don’t send thoughts and prayers; I give rides and meals etc and help where I can. Without God, I can truly understand accountability, knowing that whatever I do, nobody is going to lessen the consequences of my negative actions, and no empty promises of "ten fold coming back to me" for doing the right thing.

I am grateful that the only thing I have as a "higher power" is the experiences of the group, no matter how different from mine they may be, to give me a better way to cope, and real life, real time, help when I need it.

And coffee.
And sunshine.
And the ocean.
And all the great writers.
And my sponsor, Chuck D.

I’m not going to get into the God vs no God vs HP discussion. However, I would like to say that I enjoy your posts and thoughts. I like the idea of pulling your own weight in life, and letting the rest “fall into place”. Thanks for your contributions to this board, and this world.

Hey man, thanks for saying that, I really appreciate it. I'm working on my delivery. I can seem kinda bristly sometimes, and I'm really working on that, so that my posts aren't dismissed and misplaced anger etc. So, thanks.

God Bless you Amanda

Well said Taylor

Thank you Sam.

It's strange that people think you "hate god" if you're an atheist.

You need a reverse lobotomy to get back the pieces of brain you're missing.

I don't "hate god". I don't believe in god. Or the devil. Or the Easter Bunny. Or Santa Claus. I don't "hate" things I don't believe in.

I hate rush hour traffic on Fridays. I hate weak coffee. I hate waking up an hour before my alarm goes off. I hate when people talk, loudly, about things they know nothing about, perhaps because they are stupid, but even more sad than that, because they have not investigated. I "hate" tangible things.

It’s not easy to be a believer in a higher power in a world full of miracles. I am more of a believer in a spirit (greater than myself) that moved enough wind and energy to make me realize I was better off without the booze. Everyone is allowed to have their own perspective and beliefs. I do like the spirit of the Holidays though. Happy Thanksgiving!

While I'm a spiritual person myself and do believe in a higher power, I appreciate your perspective here. I think it's good for others who may have similar views and feel turned off by then "higher power" element of some recovery programs to know there are people out there navigating recovery who don't believe in God. God can be such a personal thing for people, which is why it may feel easy to get defensive. But, if I have the expectation that people will respect my beliefs in this area, I should be able to do the same for others whose beliefs are different. Thanks for sharing!

God CAN BE a personal thing to people. And when it IS, that's totally cool. But generally, god people are very pushy about it, even to the point of government politics and forcing their will on people, especially on women.

I am absolutely defensive. Defensive of the freedom of and from religion. I only state these things so that people trying to get sober/clean can feel like they have a place regardless of their religious beliefs or absence of. Typically, the hardcore god people ALWAYS jump to the conclusion that I'm trying to infringe on their rights. They don't mind doing that to other people, but they freak when they encounter resistance.
