I am starting to fall into a depression and finding it hard to keep reasons for getting/staying sober in my mind. What advice can you give me?
Some days will be better than others. I have had very, very low days. It’s always just a day.
I started getting meticulous about what I was eating. I rarely eat processed or fast food. I don’t eat anything with added sugar, and I eat gluten sparingly. I upped my meat intake and I also exercise daily. It helps tremendously.
I also started to actively embrace my loneliness. I now look forward to my alone time. I take a long walk or bike ride in the woods or along the river and just breath the air and feel nothing, and that’s perfect. I also stopped expecting anything from anyone, because the older I get the more I realize every interaction is just transactional. There’s nothing anybody wants to just “give” to me, and it’s my responsibility to make my life worth living.
Loneliness and depression is a very real struggle. Every day is different. Do what you can. Control what you can control. Let the rest fall where it may.
If you're thinking about drinking, whatever it is that you're feeling, it's not bad enough to drink. If you're thinking about drinking you need to learn to play the scene forward. What will happen if you drink? Only you can really answer that.
But as far as being relieved goes, it only lasts for a very short time and then we wake up with more guilt to carry around because we know that we accomplished nothing. Now we have to start all over again. And the wheel goes round and round and round.
If you're doing nothing while you're trying to stay sober you will probably get that in return. Nothing. My advice to you is that you start going to AA meetings and start hanging out with people that have been sober for a long period of time.
This link will take you to the stores for both platforms regardless of what kind of phone you have.
It's a great app to find meetings regardless of where you live in the US.
Hangovers and guilt make depression worse for me
Hey I added you.
Depression can be a real threat. You have to think of yourself before you use. And really ask yourself if I use right now. What’s the risk? Is it really risking everything for a temporary fix? Instead of wanting to get something to use imagine what you would have now and where you would be if you haven’t used.
Kinda go back and forth with that and see if you can find an answer. It may or may not help but I hope so!
Thank you for this piece. I'm definitely going to control what I can and I hope the rest will fall in place
Thank you for this piece Logan I really hope it helps
Drink water. It’s my higher power. G.O.D is prevalent in its quantum. Think of water as number 4. The number indicates sanction and it cures you because the physiological pessimist sanity of it all. Doesn’t hurt to try.
I pray for you⚡️
Lots of great answers here so I’m gonna throw something out that I have not seen yet.
Help others.
Even if outside of AA - see if you can volunteer at a food bank or something as simple as paying for the car behind you at the Starbucks drive thru.
Kindness always helps me feel
Better no matter how big or small
I hope you feel better soon
There is nothing going on in your life that a drink won't make worse. Stay sober and wait for the promises to unfold.
I’d say this. I’m guessing that starting to love yourself is going hand in hand with being sober. Looking from a positive rather than negative view, keep giving yourself love and the sobriety that goes along with it. All those great smiles in your photos aren’t going to stay there by themselves!
I feel this. I’m so down lately. Been clean and sober 50 days and I’m starting to ask myself why. This stage I’m in really sucks. I don’t even know what to do. I’m sorry you’re feeling this way too but it’s nice to know I’m not alone.
Thank you for lightening up my day
Thanks for the nice piece I'm gon love myself more and see what happens
Thank you
You’re facing depression head on- you could drink and prolong it and not really face it or you can find healthy tools that will be useful for the rest of your life. That’s what I’m doing with my anxiety, going face to face baby! Like being in a boxing ring with the mutherfcker
you got this!
Good things will happen. Money back guarantee. Learning to be kind and gentle to yourself is a process; it’s not easy at first, but it gets easier with time.
You're definitely right I have to be gentle on myself
Have you considered therapy and/or meds?
Since my meds took effect, I have had little to no urges to drink. Once my depression and anxiety were under control, I just don't feel the need to self-medicate.
