I was 40 when I made my first sincere attempt to become, remain sober. I did well for some time. At 43, I picked up again…by December of 2021, I had wasted the majority of my forties chained to the poison that is alcohol. I will enter my 50s in less than two years. I have made a commitment to be sober. Moment by moment. As has been mentioned, better late than never-as that saying goes. Kudos for showing up and wanting to be sober. There are many tools and much support. Rooting for you and everyone here.
Rehab is not an option unfortunately
I said that. Then I realized it actually was. Turns out it was the only option.
I’m not saying this to be cruel or snide. Not even dramatic. But when I hear people say rehab isn’t an option, I wonder what they think of OD as an option? Becoming crippled in a car wreck? Getting arrested for possession? Because these are options.
@shawn is right. If you’ve been trying to get clean for 10 years and you’re still using, rehab is the only option. In my program there’s a saying, “whatever you put before your recovery you will lose to your addiction”. So if it’s your children, parents, job, house, or whatever else that you think you can’t be away from for a month, eventually you’re going to lose it anyways if you don’t get clean.
One day at a time.
