I don’t miss drinking

I do kind of miss having such an easy escape from life though.

Hang in there, but I know exactly what you mean..One day at a time..

Likewise!

Checking out was good when it worked and when I could control it. At some point I could no longer check out when I wanted to. Then I checked out of everything; the good and the bad. In the end the alcohol was doing what it wanted with me; destroying any thing that was me, until there was nothing left to check out of.

I found that when I go Hiking that’s my escape from the everyday noise.
If you’re looking for a now escape, I try meditation with breathe work or reading a book, or calling a friend or going to a meeting. That’s simple tasks can really release one from bondage of self.

It was a great solution until it wasn’t a solution but a problem.

To me escape is a misnomer. It doesn't get us out of things. If anything it acts as a temporary dam in the stream of life. The trouble with a dam is when it is released the problem it crates is many times worse than the original flow of life could ever create. I have seen where a dam break has washed entire cities away. Intoxicating is much like that. We us it to stop feeling only to have the built up "life" We thought we escaped come crashing down on us in a destructive wave of catastrophe.
